SportingShooter 0
I would think strongly about getting a .270, see what precisely it has to offer you. Try and shoot one first 6.5x55 is a very good calibre and with most bullets the energies are pretty similar to that of the .243. But as you say, you can get a lot better Varmint bullets easily for a .243. .30-06 is a vintage calibre, but is still being used a lot, do you have Reds there that would suit a .30-06? Have a look at the 7mm Remington and the .308 Winchester. SS Quote Link to post

(perhaps limp away) Larger/more powerful rounds give more tolerance...BUT that was NOT your original question!!! Quote Link to post

SNAP SHOT 194
i am simply going to make an observation here, last week a friend i know took a workmate from dublin hunting reds not far from where i live. on the same morning i took a fallow at 226 yards with the .243, neck shot instant death, my friend with a 6.5x55 took his at 304 yards through the skull. Now this fella landed with his .270 and my mate took him to an ideal place with plenty of close stalking due to the cover. And this is fact not a story... they got to within yards of an 8 pointer stag which the shooter was happy to take with his .270..... BANG went out followed by thump.... the stag run and stopped about 140 yards away BANG again hitting the stag..... When we made our way back to the cold room with our two fallow there was my other friend looking kinda angry....i took 6 shots to bring this small red down and an hour chasing him up into the hill.......6 fooking shots all the deer was good for was dog food.....my friend madde him drag the deer himself through the hillside so as to make him think before he ever pulls the trigger again........... if your looking for a good round for deer with the 6.5 then go for the 129grain sst...by hornady you won't need nothing else......provided you can do your part....... on the same instance i seen a deer hit at around 100 yards with a 30-06 and vanish, never to by found....... in the last four years i've never had a deer run away from the .243 never........ SO is it really a downgrade......? bullet selection is excellent also as said, light recoil, but this can also be said for the 6.5, And as said the 30-06 is a vintage calibre which i'd say will be phased out sooner rather than later.........remember if you can put the bullet where it needs to go then there will be no problem with any rifle, as for my choice .........................243 simple good luck in your decision.... SportingShooter 0
.50 BMG, Barrett is the Maker then what do you call a .416 barret You call it a .416 Barrett. In this case the .416 Barrett is the name of the round. .50 cal Barrett is not the name of the round. It is .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun). SS Quote Link to post
