Tiff 36
the Amish near us buy black walnuts in the hull, they pay $13 per 100 pounds. Which I thought sounded like a lot of money, but that was before I knew what it entailed. I spent 4 1/2 hours crawling around on my hands and knees picking up walnuts, and still only had about half of them picked up. I then had to bag them up (with some half-assed help from Kye), load them, and drive them 10 miles to the Amish community near us. THEN helped dump each bag into the de-huller and wait for the final weight. I wanted to take some pics but they already think I'm a wierdo. So I took in 10 onion sacks full ... and received $14.12 ... whoop dee doo. BUT the plus was getting those damn walnuts out of the yard, they are a pain in the hiney! Now I need to pick up the rest. Yuk.

But worrying about whether the Amish think you're a weirdo ............. They're not exactly the most normal of people! Just out of interest, do you get your leather dog gear made by them? I'd be interested to see some if you do, I've got a bit of a fetish for that sort of thing! Nice truck by the way!

Tiff 36
Funny that you mention the leather gear SS, while I was waiting for my big pay-off I noticed that the farm on the other side of the walnut farm has a bakery and also a leather shop. I have been trying to get him to come with me to "AmishVille" (I don't know what else to call it?) for the last 2 years, but he thinks my infatuation with the Amish and Menonites is creepy. But I can't help it! I didn't grow up around them and I'm a TOTAL Little House on the Prairie fan, which reminds me of the Amish. Anyway all of my raving about the little stores, cheap produce, animal auctions etc didn't move him a bit. Kye can't visit the bakery as he's a Caeliac, but he lit up when I told him about the leather shop (he lit up then I told him about the lady with the moustache, but that's another story ) They were shut the last time I went by but I need to get in there, Kye has a dog we need a decent cut type of collar for, and my running bitches need new collars (a coon ripped one off Slag last month so she's squeezed into a terrier collar right now), and we thought it would be ideal to see what they could knock up for the dogs. We also are in need of some new permission and thought speaking to the Amish would be a good idea, they might be happy to have us do some pest controlling. I LOVE that truck, we ALWAYS have a ton of room, super comfortable, the air conditioning runs like a freezer, the heater and heated seats are awesome for us cold-blooded bitches  ... the only drawback is the 9 miles per gallon we get. Subaru gets about 30. BIG difference!

DUCKWING That's what Kye said we needed to do something like that for next year, except the walnut tree we have is HUGE and would take a hell of a lot of heavy duty netting. He hates the tree as he thinks that the roots is what caused us to have several inches of water in out basement several times this spring and summer, and I can't say I'd complain much ... I don't know if they use the hulls, I would assume that they do something with them? It was really cool, the huller thingy grated all of the hulls off and the walnuts in there shells rode a little conveyer belt up and then down into sacks. The hulls rode a different conveyer belt to dump into a wagon where two drafts were hitched. When the wagon filled up, they hauled it over to another BIG wagon and the hulls were shoveled into that big one. I used tp think that they don't use any power or modern stuff, but I've noticed that it isn't always the case. Each community has a telephone somewhere somewhat convenient for emergencies and speaking to family far away, and some things like the walnut huller are around. But plows, mowers are old fashioned and powered by horses, and their refrigeration are just block houses wrapped in that blown-on insulation. Not sure about the milk pump houses, they sell a lot of milk to "regular" farms in the area, so I'm not sure if they refrigerate with power or just kept in cold houses?
