Cornio 0
Hello, I'm new (1st post). Thought I'd share this little story. I came down one morning, went outside to feed the boys and saw the door slightly open and immediately thought the worst. I opened the door and there they were all curled up sound asleep. "That was lucky" I thought. That same night I went to the pub up the road and was accosted as soon as I walked through the door by the local bore/nosey bugger. "You've got ferrets haven't you? What colour are they?" he asked. "One polecat, one albino. Why?" "I saw a white one outside the pub real early this morning, hanging around outside." That's when it clicked that they MUST have been out in the village during the night. "Did you see both of them? What about the polecat?" "Nope, didn't see that one just the white 'un." That was the first sighting. I was now getting worried as I know a lot of people have chickens and rabbits in their gardens and the pub is a good 300 yards up the road. I anticipated lots of irate chicken owners, crying kids with dead pet rabbits, angry parents, the works. The next day I went to the local shop, same thing again. "You've got ferrets haven't you?" "Yep." As I rolled my eyes, "What've they done?" "Nothing, it's just that I think one might have escaped. I saw it outside the shop yesterday morning." "White one or polecat?" "Ooh no, not a white one a dark browny sort of one, what's a polecat?" "Never mind, what was it doing?" "Just hanging around outside for quite a while then it disappeared." Now this has got me thinking. They both escaped. They were spotted at seperate locations. Spotted at the only two locations that I walk to. Did they hatch some kind of plan to find me? When I let them out they like to follow me around. I'm wondering if they were following my scent to the pub and shop and decided to split up when the trail split. It's also pretty good that they found their way back home alright. I think it's quite funny considering that if nobody had spotted them, I'd be none the wiser. The little buggers! Kay 3,709
Well i would go over the cage with a fine tooth comb incase it was yours, from experience if any of mine have got out i put them back & they go straight to the escape point & get out again making it clear where the weak spot in the cage is It dont seem like normal ferret behaviour to me to escape & come home & not try to escape again are you sure they were your ferrets? Cornio 0
It dont seem like normal ferret behaviour to me to escape & come home & not try to escape again are you sure they were your ferrets? They were definitely mine, I'm the only one who has them in the area. So am I right in thinking that this is unusual behaviour? The pub is 300 yards away and the shop is a bit closer in the opposite direction. The cage is ok, turns out that somebody didn't lock it properly the previous night - belt and braces from now on. Brimmer 220
Yep they deffinately do, (as long as the dozy little buggers don't get lost!) I think they sometimes have the mind slightly bigger than a goldfish, and when they have a kill will make there way back to base, if they are familiar with the area. Most just carry on roaming and being distracted till somebody picks them up! Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Perhaps they went to the shop for a paper and decided to nip to the pub for a quick half and chicken in a basket, at least they're not banned from your local. Quote Link to post
flying ferreter 0
hi all, Great story, Theres loads of similar adventures to be found on the net. The best one was of a ferret who stole part of a pasty which was never found and the cheeky bugger whipped it away somewhere in the house. About 3 weeks/months later when the occupants were having a dinner evening they showed their guests the ferret which shortly dissapeared, only to rejoin them at dinner with the stolen pasty (must have been manky!) and proceeded to eat with them. I'm having my first season with two Poleys and I wished I've kept them before, their so much fun as a pet and had a great day out rabbiting with them last week. Yes I am paranoid about locking them up. check 4 times....! Happy fertin Quote Link to post
