stubby 175
I have a deben rangefinder, cost £130, fantastic bit of kit, simular in size to a monocular, hold to eye and look at object, you have a very small circle in centre of lens, push the button and up pops the range, can be set to either metres or yards can range find anything, from a 2" bit of plastic, to a bus or more, you get the picture Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
if i was after one i would save just that bit more and get a leica rangefinder from the usa or a secondhand one. there the dogs bits Quote Link to post
stubby 175
but why?, a deben one will rangefind from 35yds to around 600yds, cheap and simple, why pay more for something that does the same thing, what does a leica do, that a cheaper one dont Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
but why?, a deben one will rangefind from 35yds to around 600yds, cheap and simple, why pay more for something that does the same thing, what does a leica do, that a cheaper one dont I've not had a Deben RF. I've owned a Nikon Prostaff 440 and now my luverly juberly Leica CRF 900. The main difference between those two is that the Leica has infinitely better glass. That means in low light (even over cast days not just dawn/dusk) and when out lamping I can actually see what I'm ranging. With the Nikon I'd have to find something "near" my target, like a rock, tree, etc., sometimes I couldn't even see a fox's reflecting eyes if he was a ways off. The Leica also has a lit display, so I can read it easily, the Nikon had an LCD display which was impossible to read unless you had lamp light or something bright to read it against at dawn/dusk. I've also heard, in topics debating cheap vs expensive (over the past few years), that the more expensive brands will range more accurately and also more reliably, meaning something you ranged say 150 yards won't come back as a different range the fifht time you range it. Now, why would you range something five times? Well you wouldn't really, but if you ranged five different things once each, can you be sure you're getting a correct result? Anyway, I'm not knocking anything, I've only owned the two I named above. I know which is better and I know why The price difference (both came from USA) was 130 Euro My money, not anyones elses, would go on the Leica every time Look up Scopestop on Ebay. I should really say that if you're shooting exclusively in daylight, then it won't matter too much what you get. The quality does show through in low light conditions though. That's why you'll hear stalkers talking of Leica and Swarovski bins, and S&B, Swaro etc scopes. Quote Link to post

If it's very small, or way way off then chances are given RF's are fixed magnification you'll be getting a range to the animals immediate area Quote Link to post
