A dog yapping when chasing something, is usually due to the dog getting frustrated because it can't catch whatever it's chasing.

Take it after a few rats to get it started. It should be able to catch them no problem, and so will build up it's confidence and learn that now and again, it will catch something.

It's a terrier: terriers yap through all the reasons that have already been given: you'd have to stop it chasing if you want it to stop yapping! I like the fact that mine yap when working cover and chasing rabbits: that way the lurchers know where the quarry is and get themselves in the right place for when it bolts.
