JordKil 0
I recently got 2 poley hobs and intend on working them. They were born near the end of july so are about 3-4 months old. One of them is noticably bigger than the other. I was wondering how I should start them working? They eat a rabbit once a week and have other raw foods now and then too. The smaller hob is a voracious feeder and will go for all of the food eagerly while the other is quite hesitant to take food while im there (but he does eat as he is well built) Of what I've said which one would be best to actually work or should I just give them both a try and if so how?? (will get pics soon...just need to get them to sit still first ) Thanks Jordan Quote Link to post
will.f11 24
when all the undergrowth dies back (unless you are lucky enough to have an unlimited supply of open burries) leave them for a tiny bit but as soon as you think possible put them in one by one with another experienced ferret if possible. but otherwise just try and feed them rabbit as much as possible and get them running through some nice small warrens. not too big so they get lost. good luck mate Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
Thanks mate And I take it that Im to use nets if i want to catch anything? Also do I them down the same hole or each down a different one? Edited October 15, 2008 by JordKil Quote Link to post
stubby 175
try to find a smallish warren, 6 holes or so, place purse nets over all the holes, and starting at one side, place the ferrets, each down a nearby hole, you may find them a bit hesitent to go down, or they may shoot down quick as anything, then keep on your toes, if you hear rumbling below, its rabbits Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
Ok that sounds easy enough thanks But one of the boys isnt very..how do I say... good? He just wants to get away and hide. He's most likely not settling in as fast as the other one, who is great and actually comes back to you when you want. Is it worth chancing him and maybe having to dig him out? Quote Link to post
The one 8,592
I think once you put them in the burrow the playing will stop and there hunting insticts will kick in ,if you cant put them to ground with a experanced ferret put them in differnt sides of the burrow so you see if one's doing all the work Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
Yeah that sounds more likely as I dont have access to an experienced ferret and I do think that one of them will work really well and the other wont so much, but then again I could be in for a surprise. Quote Link to post
The one 8,592
All you can do is try them mate they might surprise you but dont go crazy keep to small burrows till they get the hang of it and good luck Quote Link to post
JordKil 0
Im nae planning on goin nuts i dont want to lose them lol and the big warren closest to me I'll need permission for any way but there's a wee one (bout 4-5 holes at most) on land that my neighbours (i think...or mine lol) Quote Link to post
