Young Terriers

Recommended Posts

Allright lads,

Just wondering how you bring your terrier pups on from when they are pups untill they are old enough to be dug too.

I have just got two terrier pups out of really good stock off two lads on here. Just after as much advice on possible on bringing them on right so I dont spoil them as they are out of the right stuff so if brought up and entered correctly should do the buisness.

Any advice would be much appriciated as these are my first digging pups.

odnt do alot with them other than the usual puppy stuff until they are about 5-6month then let them start knocking about where there are rats to and let them learn to hunt. In time they will meet a rat and thats that. Will get a few bites but they soon ignore that and will probably make them more determinded to kill them quicker!

As for foxing get out with someone, simple as really. Iv tried doing it alone so far and it aint easy or much fun to be honest

When would you start letting them enter un occupied earths etc?

And

When I take them out for rats its right that I should try and keep them away from rabbits aint it?

Did you let your dog rag dead foxes ?

I didnt let my bitch enter any holes until the first time she went to ground after something. If they are out of good stuff they wont take much encouragement! I let mine see a few foxes and have a rag on them yeah, cant see that it will do them any harm myself.

About the rabbits, youl get blokes say to leave them alone and blokes that say let them go after rabbit. I personnally never let my bitch go after them for the simple fact that i dont fancy digging 8ft to a poxy rabbit when i was expecting a fox.

Keep them away from rabbits or it will do your head in for years to come. If you encourage them at rabbits they will hunt them all day. IMO its best to take a young pup out when it has just got to the year mark. Tie him up at the hedge or fence at the side of the dig and let him watch several digs. After you have done this let them have a rag surely with another terrier. Make sure there aren't too many dogs around though or some of them will get jealous and there'll be a row. This will make them eager and you can then start letting them travel holes. If it all works out everything should fall into place itself.

I was never going to encourage them on rabbits just while you are out looking for the rats you are going to bump into the odd rabbit it is enevitable really

you are coming into it at the wrong time unfortunately!every one enters dogs in different ways, some say start a young dog on cubs, some say with stop ends but there are many ways.you are better off finding a bloke in your area who will take you out.

the dog are from good stock the instict will be there. spend this time befriending them and introducing them to non kill animals. make sure they are do what there told before going out with them. try finding a older experianced dog to go out with when ready.

In my opinion, you've given your self a harder job by bringing to young dogs on.

The best word of advise I can give you is patience and let them kill as much small stuff as possible before going 'up in class'

Good luck mate, it's not easy or every other show dog breeding, half brained t*t would be doing it, on the other side of that though, it's not hard either ;)
