That works too. Whichever you're more comfortable with... expect to fill in an application form though. If you're keen and in the right place you'll get the job.

Good luck to you and keep me posted! :D

I agree with Chris, best job I ever had...pay not good, but who cares when there is fun and interest involved! Have done the "Office" and it sucks! It has its dull/shitty moments, but on the whole a good day out. I work for a small rural firm which is far more likely to yield shooting or other interesting opportunities than a big national, who will have you looking at bait all day.

Good luck!

I too like chris left the construction trade, and a very good wage, after watching "the life of grime" and thinking it looked interesting, I applied for a job that I saw on the internet, as they were looking for people with construction skills, not affraid of hieghts etc, got offered the job straight away, starting at the bottom on £15000 a year, was half what I earnt in building, anyway, you got a company van and phone, so I thought I'd give it a year and see how I got on with the job, and if wages would improve

I work nights, sub contracted to london underground, although our hours are 9pm to 5am, its mainly job and knock, so most nights we dont start till gone 10pm and finish around 4am, so thats the one main perk, plus we work sunday night to thursday night

within the first few months they had booked me into my BPCA exam (which I passed) plus I have most certificates needed for working on the underground, plus cherry pickers license, mobile tower, first aider, nvq level 1 health and safety to name a few, by my first year my wage had gone upto £22000, and by my 2nd year £26,250 which is alot more than a lot of pest control companies pay, but then half of my working night is doing bird control, which is were the companies can earn mega money, I've just got in after shooting pidgeons all night, (well from 1-30am to 3am :hunter:

the downside is as a night worker, you loose all your social life, as your at home when your mates are at work, and vice vesa of an evening, but you cant have everything, Ive got a fully stocked van (great for private jobs) and as a fully quailified pest controller, permission to ferret/shoot comes alot easier

am just in the proceeds of applying for my FAC, again through work, so fingers crossed on that one

That's a fair point too. A small rural firm is more likely to yield more rural type work but vacancies can be few and far between. Nationals tend to have a turnover of staff, some higher than others, so you might secure a job faster and get a high level of training.

You have to honestly ask yourself whether you can stomach the pay cut. It'll never be anything like construction wages (until we get the next outbreak of bubonic/pneumonic plague) but half the battle of going to work is toleration. Actually enjoying what you do for 40 hours of the working week is a big step forward towards putting back what matters into your life.

Then... what Stubby said! :D

Usually plenty of overtime with a bigger companies.

I know what you mean about pay cuts. I did similar but I really didn't mind once I got my head around it. I enjoy it that much. Sure we had to cut back on things, and adjust our lifestyles but it was important, to me, to do something I enjoyed. Basically I've got to work until I'm at least 65. I'll be f****d if that's going to be anything other than on my terms. Pest control allows me to do that.

The internet is the easiest place to start.

1st thing is the law. Food and Environmental Protection Act. Control Of Pesticides Regulations. Food Safety Act. Pests Act. Wildlife and Countryside Act.

2nd is your pest species. Main things are winter problems regarding mice and rats. Summer problems are wasps and ants. Periodic problems will introduce you to cockroaches and other exotic insects. Rural jobs will bring you into contact with the stuff you already do. Learn as much as you can about the above. The RSH exam will test your knowledge on it.

Some of the pesticide companies offer training courses that come with certificates. You will have to pay for these though and in many cases they're nothing more than a sales opportunity. If you don't know much about the work you'll be covering they're a good place to start but in many cases they're run by salesmen selling product and show casing the new gear. You get a nice certificate at the end of it but it's like winning an argument on the internet... f*****g pointless. ;)

Best way to learn this job is to get with someone that is good at the job. Don't look for the guy with the most years in. Look for the guy that won't shut the f**k up about pest control! He's usually the one that can do it well. :D
