Mallen 0
I’ve just built a new Ferret Court 6' x 6' x 6'6" with a raised bedding area to put my 2 Adults and 4 Kits which have previously been kept in a 4’ x 2’ x 2’ hutch, got a proper ferret corner loo for one corner and tried covering most other corners with food or drink dispensers, but they wont stop crapping everywhere. Absolute nightmare keeping the Court clean, does anyone have any advice on how to stop them shitting everywhere and in just one area, preferably the loo? Thanks, Mark. Quote Link to post

It seems to be a common problem when you have a multi layer cage/ set up, all i would do is cover the court floor in shavings it will at least soak up the mess, also bare in mind you have given them a fair increase off accomodation. Sometimes they will just do it where its easiest & normally as far away from there sleeping area as possible, if theres lots of ramps tubes etc for then to have to use to get the the toilet corner you have chosen for them they will do it in the most inconvenient area imagineable, personally i gave up with trays & just use shavings Quote Link to post

I know its a pain in the arse as you have put the time & effert into making them a nice home, but if you get the hutch in there & put the food in the hutch & the bedding, they will climb down to the court & poo there, they do tend to use the loer levels as a toilet , make sure the access is easy to the run as well Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
Oh just a thought is the bedding area an enclosed box set up or something like hammocks ? Quote Link to post
The one 8,592
Did you put some of the old crap in the corner you where wanting them to crap in ??? Quote Link to post
Mallen 0
Did you put some of the old crap in the corner you where wanting them to crap in ??? The One - Yes I have put the crap in the corner loo, but that doesn’t seem to be working yet and it hasn’t stopped them shiteing all over Kay - The sleeping area is enclosed, they not only shite in the box where they are sleeping they are shiteing on top of the boxes and in the corner of the shelving around the sleeping boxes. I might look at removing the shelving and let them gain access to the sleeping area through a 4" pipe so they can’t climb on top of the boxes as well. What do you think? Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
you can try adding a pipe for them to walk through , if its going to be straight into the bedding box i would make sure its well ventilated as the box will get hot inside You may find its because its new to them as well & going from one lay out to another & giving them the extra space will take a little to get used to , i am sure they will get the hang off the toliet area in time Quote Link to post
fireman 11,457
I have a large court and when i first put them in there they were doing the same,i just kept cleaning up and putting trays where they were sh**ing. They use them mostly but i still have a few accidents,i use litter trays with shavings in them and if the ferrets use a different corner i just add another tray. They will sometimes just choose to use a different corner,i add a tray and if they stop useing the old one i remove it.I have only 4 ferrets now and have 3 trays in my court but they have just started to use a another corner,i have put down another tray and will see what one they stop useing, if i just move the tray over they will sh*t in both spots(they know what thier doing the little buggers),hence the adding another tray. lorelei0922 2
Trays never worked brilliantly for me.. no matter the size.. they prefer to dig around and shove the tray out ofthe corner... i did however have this problem when introducing them to a larger area like you've done... as suggested above.. keep cleaning out the corners .. use a bit of antibacterial spray to get rid of the smell.. but make sure its wiped up good! i know its a bit fiddly.. but what works for me.. thank god i dont work out of the home! catch the ferrets asleep... then wake them up.. take them to where the poo is... give em a sniff ... as soon as one has gone... give the next a sniff.. they usually will turn and go right in the same spot... a couple tries could just give them the idea that thats where to go.. specially if you keep cleaning up the other places... works well with kits at least!!
