Guest SPIFF
JUST AFTER YOUR THOUGHTS. I WAS TALKING TO A MATE AND HE WAS SAYING THAT WHILE OUT WITH MATES THE OTHER DAY THEY RECKONED AND AGREED THAT GOOD CONSISTENT RELIABLE WORKING TERRIERS,OF ALL BREEDS,ARE GETTING HARDER TO COME BY.DAY BY DAY WAS THE QUOTE. NOW MY OPINION WAS THAT WITH SO MANY QUITERS IT WAS LACK OF EXPERIENCE OR A MACHO MENTALITY PUSHING EM TOO HARD ,EXPECTING TOO MUCH ETC ETC. SURELY THE AMOUNT OF DOGS NOT MAKING THE GRADE CAN T BE DOWN TO BAD TERRIERMEN?AND UNFORTUNATELY IM TENDING TO SIDE WITH MY MATES OPINION. PS.THE LADS TALKING ABOUT THIS HAVE BEEN IN DOGS FOR WELL OVER 20 YEARS EACH AND KNOW WHAT THEY RE ON ABOUT. WHAT DO YOUS RECKON?IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END? Quote Link to post
top terrierman 90
yes i think working terriers are geting harder come across dont know why but could be something to do with people not testing their terriers out before breeding from them as for over working them or pushing them to far i dont know at what point have you over worked a terrier when the season starts up [bANNED TEXT] id be diging 3 or 4 days a week i dont think i would be over doing it at that if the terriers cant do that then their not worth keeping i have gone through a fair amount of terriers over the years i dont think i over worked them the fact was they just werent good enough,it is hard get good terriers that will stay at it season after season.but hasnt that always been a problem Quote Link to post
gavmac 0
IMO the £££££££££££££££££££££ has alot to do with it and rossettes Quote Link to post
Guest dee mac
i dont think so spiff if you looking to have a good cosistent terrier you have to put in the hard work ie rear your pups each year run them on correctly give them plenty of experience in the field then when time is right give them there chance if they dont make it they are culled and the process starts again .if they do make it they are not over matched in there first year they get plenty of time to recover between digs and only when they have proved there worth in the field then they can be bred and the process starts again .this is the way myself and my digging mate s have been doing it for some years now most of pups born are kept none are sold unless space is at a premium even then they go to men we know so we know how they fair up .it means a lot of time effort and money but i think its the only way to keep the working terrier up to the standard we expect .jmho Quote Link to post
kirstysdad 827
some very good replys to this one diffenitly differrent to years ago when you could go out mob handed and not get any bother and even the young dogs would get a chance to see plenty of work but one of the most important things is to be true to yourself when it comes to keeping young dogs that will probably not make the grade because you bred it from your best does not always mean it will do the same you may need to cull hard sometimes but this is better than passing on dogs that you would not keep then a few years down the line you see them being used to bred from and producing sub stantard dogs hence putting poor working skills back into working circles and diluting genuine working lines always worker to worker and dont keep shit it costs the same to feed a good one as it does to feed a bad one Quote Link to post

mouse 282
plenty of decent blokes our way with kennells full of very good terriers but they just keep quiet and keep at it. Quote Link to post
MATTI 34
IMO the £££££££££££££££££££££ has alot to do with it and rossettes Agree with ''gavmac'' here but also i read a thread on Pitt x lakey's and then i think is there any wonder why a good honest working terrier is hard to find How many litter's are wasted when such breed's are crossed, either too big, too aggresive, won't kennel up etc; good honest working terrier x good honest working terrier is the way forward and has been for hundred's of year's. Guest Eamon.Mc
IMO, while there is still men who breed and work their terriers in the most trying of places to educated game, there will still be proper working terriers out there. I try and give my dogs enough work to keep them on their toes and when the time comes they will be tested proper. If all terriermen were honnest with their dogs they would do the same and would'nt be breeding from young untested stock. Too many breeding from untested dogs IMO. Quote Link to post
Guest blackntan
MOST OF THE TOP TERRIER MEN I KNOW THAT HAD A YARD FULL OF TOP CLASS WORKING TERRIERS 30 YEARS AGO STILL HAVE A YARD FULL OF TOP CLASS WORKING TERRIERS TODAY !!!!!!! SHOWING WILL ALWAYS GO ON , AND NEVER HAD ANY IMPACT ON THE TRUE WORKING TERRIERMAN, ANY PERSON THAT THINKS BREEDING FOR SHOWS EFFECTS THE WORKING TERRIER IS AN EGIT, .ELOQUENTLEY PUT p***y, Quote Link to post

In my opinion, any terrierman worth his salt should leave NOTHING to chance when it comes to breeding! The three main reasons for inferior working terriers are 1. Lazyness 2. Money 3. Ignorance Obviously on the breeders behalf. Great working terriers can still win rossettes and many a great worker has been bred through an introduction at a show...........FACT ! Guest SPIFF
spiff ,do you not think its down to the point now over the past few years ,that the days of taking half a dozen terriers out for a good days digging is beyond us ?? I seen us 20 year ago having 5 or 6 pups pinned out just to listen and watch whats going on , maybe getting 3 digs a day at least . Getting good hard digs of 5 hrs and more where dogs could be tested to their ability ,moving from one part of the earth to the other then to another then when you know the dogs settled and on his game rock steady you dig and when you break through the dog has three bits of quarry rounded up into the one pot . How many terrier men wouldve thought the dog was f@@king about by not getting the chance to see a good terrier working to his ability by being able to round up the 3 bits of quarry in different parts of the earth . .So is the terrier of old failing us ?? Or the lack of terriermen not getting the knowledge OR the chances we had 20 yrs ago to test their dogs to these capabilities they are supposed to pocess do not exsist any longer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dited September 6, 2008 by SPIFF Quote Link to post
Guest dee mac
i know were your coming from spiff but as the new comes in some of the old go out and 2years ago we had a litter of 2 dogs 2 bitches out of that four only one bitch made the standard required so two years spent on the other 3 was a waste of time in some peple s eye s but not ours as we now have a top bitch who hopefully will keep going strong and can be bred from if we had sold the 2 bitches and kept the dogs we would have nothing too show so as i said to have a good standard of terrier it takes hard work effort and a few pound but most of all detemination as some years you could end up with nothing for your effort s but if you keep aiming for the bullseye you will eventually hit it ps at present between old dogs and young dogs who have been dug me and my mate have 6 digging dogs a few ready to start and 5 young dogs in around the 17 week old bracket still think it pays to rear your pups every year as disaster is only one dig away at any time .
