Help choosing the right gun.

Right, I have just got permission to shoot on a piece of land within spitting distance from my house, that's about 280 acres in size.

The terrain of the land varies from mostly short grassland to Marshy, boggy areas, to long grassland about waist height.

I'll be out shooting mostly mornings and evenings, but sometimes in the daytime, so a range of different times, from 5am - 9/10pm. (Any suggestions about what time is best, and what weather conditions are best are much appreciated, as I said I am new to all this)

I'm from East Yorkshire, have no previous shooting experience, other than messing about on a few cans when I was a few years younger with my mates .22.

My main target I'll be looking at shooting will be small vermin such as rats and rabbits.

 

I've done a little research, and ideally I'm looking for a mid-range rifle, (that can make a clean kill no problem, deep penetration is not really an issue as I won't be eating any of quarry) and a suitable scope that will suit all my needs.

I have a budget of about £600 give or take a few quid, that's for both the scope AND the rifle.

 

Any help is MUCH appreciated as always.

Practice on some targets before going shooting live quarry. You should aim to be able to put a group of 5 shots in a space no larger than a 50p, out to 20 - 35 yards or whatever range you plan on shooting at. Are you thinking of buying a new gun / scope combo or second hand?

Thanks for the advice. As regards to your question I am keeping an open mind, if I can find a second hand gun/scope for the right amount of money, in good nick.. etc then I will take it, failing that I will just purchase new.

The obviously advantage of it being new is that I will get warranty and it will be in good nick, the disadvantages are obviously the price, as with anything that's new.

Also, if I buy second hand, and it's over the internet I'm gunna' have to take people's word's for the condition and obviously with me being new to the whole thing I might get ripped off, or not know what to look for, as for warning signs of it breaking etc.

 

Another thing I've read about are pre-charged and springers, now from what I understand pre-charged are much better, well from what I have read anyway, but wouldn't that be a pain in the backside having to get all the charging equipment, and locate a source of whatever it is you use to fill it up.

As I say I'm new to the whole scene, so correct me if I'm wrong on anything.

If you have a gunshop, divers shop or gun club with charging facilities near to you then charging should not be so much of a problem depending on what gun you decide on. Some PCP guns will only give you 30-40 shots per charge and others will give you over 100. The options for charging yourself are to get a stirrup pump and charge the gun manually, or buy an air bottle to store ready compressed air in to top your gun up with. The stirrup pump can be hard work especially in summer if you let the guns compressed air level down. You will get more value for money buying second hand, possibly leaving enough left over to sort out charging gear. But with buying anything second hand its buyer beware.

for about 620ish you could get a brand new s200, oump, scope and silencer. i bought the same last week but with 10 shot mag system and im overwhelmed by how accurate at quiet it is. pumpoing the gun up isnt hard owrkat all as some people make out. If i was you there would be no question...S200

Charging equipment isn't included in the 600, that's JUST the rifle and scope, I've allocated about a grand or there abouts to spend on Hunting gear, and I'm setting 600 aside for the rifle/scope, and the rest on accessories and Clothing (Camo). And I am classing Charging gear as an accessory.

Do you think I ought to put my budget on rifle/scope up a bit, the reason I've allocated so much for clothing is because I'll want quite a bit, making sure I'm warm and dry.

You'll be able to get something new, warrantied, and legal for that kind of money. I'd recommend getting into a gun shop and seeing a few of the items they have on sale. It'll give you a much better idea of what's on the market. You don't have to go PCP, a decent springer set up is worth considering especially if you've never shot before and it'll be much cheaper than a PCP set up.

 

Also if you're shooting over marsh land you might want to consider lead free pellets.

Thanks for all your help, as I said before it is MUCH appreciated and I will take it all on board, I'll ask about, and do my own finding out on the best Airgun dealers in my area, wait 'til I get payed and take it from there, ask if I can hold a few, see if they feel oright to hold.. etc.

 

Also, with me being 17 still, will I need to go into a shop with an appropriate adult, I.e. 18 or over?

lead free so you dont poison the wildlife good luck with what ever gun you get s410 would be my choice and decent scope for 600 notes
