socks 32,253
quail would be fine to feed a ferret but as has been said do not put a line on it ......... Quote Link to post
Guest ferretlad
I feed my Ferrets regularly on Quail, they love it as part of a healthy diet, I think Ferreting with string is a bit dated these day's, people have moved on to Ferret locator collar's now, and i dont think it was a good idea anyway personally. Guest AngelicAcid
Just some advice mate, dont take it personnel. Im by no means an expert, im an Angel Seriously, try and get yourself a ferret finder and if the ferret gets on the back of a rabbit in a stop and, then youll need a graft to dig it out, good luck mate. Guest ferretlad
Camokid, That old boy you were talking to, when he would of been a young lad people did used to attach a length of string to the collar on their Ferrets before sending then into a Rabbit hole, my Grandfather used to Ferret using this method and at that time it was a safe way of not loosing your Ferret as they were hard to come by and they indeed put extra meat on the table, a very valuable reason in the war years why you could not afford to loose your Ferret. I dont very often have to dig my Ferret's out thankfully, try ebay for Ferret thing's you can often find thing's on there at a reasonable price, or have a look in the Countryman's Weekly there is Ferret stuff in there for sale and link's to web sites. The one 8,592
Is there nobody local to you that you can tag along with and see a bit of ferreting done Quote Link to post
stubby 175
the old boy probably meant "a linner" jill ferts were used without any string/locators, if the jills then killed underground, a big hob "linner" was sent in, line attached, knowing he would end up at the killed rabbit and jill, the line could then be dug to, but if you think about it, alot more digging, as you'd have to follow the whole line, nowdays a locator will put you right above the ferret, only needing to be dug down as for how many times does one dig, thats the same as how long is a piece of string somedays not at all, others every time Quote Link to post
Coatesy900 0
Lines are basically obsolete nowadays, but i guess it might be useful if the ferret layed up 8 foot underground. As long as it hadnt gotten snagged then a tug or two could bring it back to the surface. Quote Link to post
