Guest whitser
So Grant do you class shooting cubs just leaving the den as sport? I'm talking about cubs just a few weeks old. no one agrees with that i dont think. if lads do shoot vixens the should let the local terrierman know. least he could find the earth and dispatch the cubs humanely. better that we support each other rather then argue between ourselves. birdman6 10
when the hunting with dogs bill was passed i remember watching something on the tele. they had hunting folk a one side and shooting folk at the other side and they were trying to turn then against each other. we need to stick together don't give those b***ards anything to use against us. no field sports no countryside. Guest Eamon.Mc
I understand what your'e saying Grant, I too get callouts and it has to be done, I found 2 shot cubs on permission that I have they were only a few weeks old, thing was no-one has permission to shoot this ground, it's these guys with rifles that I can't support. Most guys have a bit o common sense but there is some ar5eholes out there with guns. I'm not against anyone shooting vermin as part of pest control whether it's cubs or not, it's the wannabe cowboys I disaggree with. Quote Link to post

shinyspade 2
nothing worse than some jumped up numpty shooting everything that moves driving around thinking there the bee's knees. there are far to many macho shooters. however lets remember every pastime has there numpties. its up to each sport to try to educate there numpties . shooting a vixen with cubs to ground discusts me. if there are foxes on your shoot deal with them before they cub or get a sensable terrierman to despach them its all about timeing and respect i know a few sporting shooters and the majority of them are genuine countrymen that dislike poor sportmanship in there chosen sport. education is the key in all fieldsports Quote Link to post
Guest ragumup
I think grant speaks a lot of sense . Iv said it before the fox is a survivor and just because you shoot a vixen thats has cubs don't think the cubs will stave the dog fox will still feed them and the vixens last years cub if there is one will too , Edited August 16, 2008 by ragumup Quote Link to post
old dog 210
I think grant speaks a lot of sense . Ie said it before the fox is a survivor and just because you shoot a vixen thats has cubs don't think the cubs will stave the dog fox will still feed them and the vixens last years cub if there is one will too , The only problem with that is the rifles have already shot dad, uncle and aunties, they don't stop at one they eliminate every fox they see. I have hunted over 30 years and in the last 6 years the rifles have wiped the places out. Driving around shooting off the back of pickups, off the roads they shot 26 foxes in one nights outing, that's not control, that's the numbers game. "Trigger happy look what I shot". Guest Eamon.Mc
I think we all have valid points, and as mentioned it's up each of us to try and educate the asholes in our chosen sports, I'd be the first to condemn shoddy terrier work. It's not the first earth I've come accross that's been left in a mess but I've done the best I can to repair the damage. If we were all of the same mindset on the asholes no matter what our chosen field is, we would'nt be having debates like these. It's always the few that spoil a good thing for us all. Like olddog says with some it's a numbers game, I spoke to a guy that shoots with a rifle all year round, driving round in his jeep, silenced rifle boasting of nearly 400 in 1 year, he then went on to say I was'nt wise out digging when I could just shoot them from the comfort of a jeep!!! Its these numpties that need educating, but where do you start? I think since the FAC laws have been slackened here in the north of Ireland after the troubles, the amount of men with rifles has risen dramatically and the number of foxes has dropped dramatically also. I can recall 10 years ago being able to kill 5-6 foxes a night with lurchers, now sometimes we are lucky to see 5-6 foxes in total. I'm a firm believer that we also have to preserve our sport which to me means having a close season. We do it in fishing hunting should be the same, unless it is genuine pest control. JMHO.
