jill with hard tits

Recommended Posts

Get her to a vet i had mastitis and its agony , red hard lumps & your feverish as well, so i know a ferret will be in pain with it

definitely something to see the vet about.. BUT!

how old are the kits?

are the lumps just hard or are they red.. hot... looking bumpy ?? THESE are the signs of mastitis.. not just being hard.. which is just an over production of milk..

if she's still weaning the kits.. put the kits back to the nipple .. and treat her with a warm moist cloth till you can get her to a vet..

THis was the advice from my vet when i had the same questions with my jill..

her teats were QUITE hard.. but not hot.. not red... didn't appear tender.. and she was producing milk from each teat...

Vet said just to make sure the kits were nursing and it will adjust on its own... but to watch for the symptoms stated above

good luck!!

I reckon its still a vet job ,if it is mastitis your going to have big problems next time you breed her .better get her looked at now rather than when she's got a litter of kitts next year and cany feed them .

Lance?, never heard so much crap.

Apply a hot damp cloth to the swollen area, then strip some milk off, if its yellowish and thick keep going till the milk looks normal.

If you get to this stage you shouldn't need a vet or antibiotics, just keep an eye on your jill and make sure all the teats are being used.

Not true mate, because she has mastitis this time round is absolutely no indication she may have problems next time.

My jill had it last year , hard red hot lumps, she had 1 kit & i just kept a close eye on her & the patches went off there own accord as the kit must have been using different teats

not got any experance of it in ferrets but if not properly treated in cows they can lose that quarter and end up in hamburgers ,but how can you strip out the infected teat till you get rid of the crap and the milk looks normal in a ferret ,surely it must be a vet job and get antibiotics ??
