Lucy 0
I've called this "Sad Story", but it's probably just normal... I'm not going to name anyone in this... A stray dog was found by a good samaritan. They took it to their vet. The vet thought that the dog may have a broken hip, but as no one was going to pay for x-rays, all he could do was make the dog comfortable and contact a well known, national society that protects animals. However, that society couldn't do anything; the vet was informed that the Society could have helped if it was a wild animal - a fox or rabbit or such like, but as a dog is considered someone's property, the owner should be responsible for it. So, the vet contated the local dog warden. They only have a budget of £50 per dog they take in; obviously that would not cover the cost of x-rays. The vet's hands were tied - couldn't put the dog down - could have been sued if the owner came forward! So, the dog warden took the dog away. I'm told that they will only keep a dog for seven days, after which time if they find a rescue centre that will accomodate a dog it will go there, or it will be destroyed, unless a family comes forward to re-home the dog as long as they don't have children under the age of six. In this case, the dog warden's vet was going to be assessing the level of pain the dog may be in over the next seven days and if the level of pain was deemed too high, it would be destroyed before the seven days were up. Then - a glimmer of hope. One of the receptionists at the vets heard about the plight of the dog and contacted Southern Lurcher Rescue. They said they would speak to the dog warden. They also asked the vet if they would fix the dog at cost price, to which he agreed. It was late and the dog warden had gone to bed, so their hands were tied until the next morning. They got onto it without delay the next morning, but... Sadly, the dog warden had the dog destroyed before leaving the previous night. Sadly, the owner never came forward. This dog was a lurcher, who was named Carl by the vet. He was 27" high, brindle, mostly greyhound with a fluffy mouth, about 18 months old, docile as anything, never once complained when he was handled by complete strangers and had a loving and gentle nature. Very well in every other way. Maybe Carl couldn't have been fixed up, but now we will never know. Another lurcher wasted. Why? I'll leave that for you to ponder. RIP Carl. XXX Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
Seems to me that the small unsung hero's are the only ones who care RIP Carl Quote Link to post

Terreir man, are you saying all dog wardens are c...s??!!! A dog warden bent over backwards for me when my lurcher went missing a cpl of months ago! She found her 4 days later. Lucy 0
Rip carl..... Dog wardens ar c**ts over there aswell then.... Well, the council's that employ them seem to have some ******* silly rules let's put it that way! I don't understand why the warden didn't call Southern Lurcher Rescue - at the end of the day, this dog could have received treatment, at cost price paid for by SLR if only the right people had been called at the right time instead of as Kay says, leaving it to the "small unsung hero's"... Having said that, our local council do micro-chipping at home for £10... I suppose their only argument is that if the owner had the dog chipped, poor Carl might still be here, or might have been put down sooner without suffering for a week. Quote Link to post

Guess that's because you're a responsible owner and made the work of the wardens work for you. This poor chap's owner, seemingly couldn't be bothered to report his dog missing, even though it really appeared to be a quality dog. Maybe there's something suspicious in that... Perhaps the owner knew the dog was going to cost him money... Maybe I'm reading too much into that - who knows. Quote Link to post

Or maybe it was a stolen dog, some 100 miles away from home.... Or maybe.... The list is endless when it comes to lurchers, as so many not to nice people try to own them! Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
I have a lot of respect for the smaller self funded dog rescues, they get on with the job in hand, lots of heartache , backache etc. finding people to foster dogs , trusting people enough to do right by the dogs you place with them must be hard . This is so sad, I would hate to think of my lurcher being left to that fate if she were lost/stolen Quote Link to post

Kay 3,709
One solution is to chip dogs , but if they change hands frequently then are the details changed as well ? Quote Link to post
Lucy 0
One solution is to chip dogs , but if they change hands frequently then are the details changed as well ? I guess not, but at least they could be traced to someone who did care about them once... and I suppose if someone cared enough to chip them, then they should care enough to update the paperwork if they sell them on... Like you say though - heaps of praise for those unsung heros! Southern Lurcher Rescue were on to it as soon as they could and would have saved him... Quote Link to post
