skycat 6,174
Youa re obviously doing a fantastic job with them to have kept them all. Just to add my two pence worth: Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near cereal of any sort, except maybe the rice pudding if you really feel you must. I've not had the job of hand rearing completely like you, but I did have a bitch become ill with a virus once and dry up when the pups were 2 12 weeks old. I was giving them scraped raw chicken, just tiny pieces the size of my finger nail at that age: no problems with shits or upset stomachs at all, and by 3 weeks they were eating scraped lamb and chicken mush (warmed with a little bit of hot water so the whole lot was mushy and warm). I've got a litter of terrier pups 4 weeks old at the moment and the bitch is 7 years old and doesn't have as much milk as she would have done a few years back. The pups have been slurping mushy raw chicken since they were 3 weeks old and are growing like weeds. Quote Link to post

johnnyboy28 1
I use lambkin its about £15 for 5kg and better than the puppy milk which is the same price for 1kg in pets at home Quote Link to post
tango 221
need somemore ideas everyone .the little feckers are all doin well but now that there up an about they are stinkin the little feckers keep gettin covered in shit now matter how many times i clean them and the cage. i was thinkin of putting some lathe across the bottom of it and putting some really fine mesh panel over it but i was worring about them hurting their toes, any better ideas Quote Link to post
mart123blue 0
Have just read this post for the first time. Had seen you advertise the pups and thought they looked a great litter. I don't have any decent advice, I think the idea with the mesh sounds better than them being covered in Sh*t, but someone hopefully will have an easier option. Good luck sounds tough but in a couple of weeks hopefully a lot better. p.s. Would another older bitch give them a bit of love now they are bigger, or am I being naive? p.p.s. rip your bitch Quote Link to post
Guest smashygadge
take them out of pen they need some bit of open ground floor where they can trot on keep their blanket etc in a corner and keep changing newspaper get a ton of it you will need it thats a job in itself mate be easier than a cage etc Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
You need to put them in as big an area as possible: 5 foot by 5 foot wouldn't be too big. Cover the floor with newspaper several sheets thick. Make a bed area in one corner big enough to contain all the puppies comfortably, just with a plank on one side, and a low lip, like a batten on the other side, just high enough to stop their bedding coming out. VetBed is the best: liquid is absorbed straight away and goes through leaving the surface dry. Puppies instinctively try and move a little way from where they sleep to pee and shit: first shitting away from the bed, peeing further away takes a little longer. The cleaner you keep their bed the more they will try and move away from it to empty themselves. I've got terrier pups of 4 weeks old who are coming right out of their bed and into the run to crap and pee: they perfected the shitting away from the bed at 3 weeks old, although their mother is still with them and does still help to clear up after them. The more regularly you change the bedding and newspaper the cleaner they will learn to become: helps a lot with house training and kennel training as they get older. If you confine them to one area where they are forced to pee and shit as well as sleep and play, it will be more difficult to get them clean at a later date. Pick up shit the moment you notice it and change the bedding at least twice a day. VetBed washes and dries in minutes: best option. DON'T put mesh under their feet: will damage their toes. Hope this helps. Edited to add: a very large carboard box will do well at this age too. Bed at one end in a smaller cardboard box with one side cut right down to allow the pups to explore and move away from the bed: newspaper all over the rest of the floor of the box. If you can get a box about 2 by 4 foot that would do for a start, but try and get bigger if you can. Quote Link to post
