Which rimfire

Recommended Posts

After shooting a non FAC air rifle for about a year on a 20 acre plot of land. I feel I now need to move up to a Rimfire. I have filled out the most of the the FAC applicaion form but im not sure what calibers to appy for. I am thinking of putting down 17MACH2, 17HMR, 22LR, 22WMR. I have heard it costs money to apply for more calibers to be added at a later date.

If I apply for all four now, will it take longer to procees my application. Ideally I would like the 22LR or the 17HMR as I have heard they are the best calibers for small vermin.

My other queation is that do you have to pay to have land checked out?

Thanks,

If its a 20 acre plot your on and its for rabbits mainly, i would reckon a .22 rimmy would be ample sufficient. If youve got more, then a 17hmr seems to be a popular choice for longer range shots.

Im no expert by a long way, but i would doubt a flo will give a first timer a licence for all 4 rimmies, then again who knows, each police force is different.

The which is safer , 22 or 17 is a bit of a hot potato, with pros and cons for both, but your right that once you get one on a licence, it costs to get another added. If youve only shot an airgun a 22 rimmy would be my choice.

I think i will just go for 22lr and 17HMR and then see what happens. I like the look of the sako quad as you can change the caliber by just changing the barrel. Thats if I get more than one caliber.

if you've only got 20 acres to work with / if you can't afford for the bullets to stray off you permission i'de go for the .17HMR

Pros: flatter trajectory than the .22LR (flat out to 100m), more predictable because it fragments on impact unlike the .22LR rounds and is less likely to rebound

Cons: It's louder than the .22LR and the bullets run at a slightly higher price

The sako quad is a very accurate rifle with a good crisp trigger pull and is worth spendng the money on in my opinion

hope this helps

The land is not flat by any means so there is alot of backstops. There are a few houses at the front of the farm, and one at the back. There is livestock in other fields and a motarway nearby. The farmer also has horses on her land, but the rabbits are down at the end of the farm which is away from the grazin field.

What would stop me actually getting an FAC, I mean land wise. I have a SGC at the moment so hopefully that will put me in good sted for an FAC. Also o you have to pay to have the land checked over ?

Thanks

you never no it mite all ready be passed. have you asked the land owner if it has been ?

if i where you go for 22lr and hmr as for the sako quad ive never shot one but have handled one in a gunshop it was very nice and nice trigger. dont forget you will need the right hight mounts for the job as the has to be room to lift the barrel before you can swap it.

you could phone your firearms department and give them the details of the land you have permission on to see if its all ready passed

I know someone used to shoot it with an air rifle. Im not sure if it was an FAC air rifle though. If it has not been already passed.Would I have to pay to have it checked over. I heard it was like another £50.

you dont have to pay to get it checked over. they do that in with the fee for the grant of the ticket.

its ok putting in for them rifles and that amount of bullets mate but to be honest on a 20 acre piece of land i think i would cut both guns and ammo because if you cant justify why you need 1200 bullets and 4 guns then you wont get it just apply for a .22 (well i would) and if its only small i cant see you getting 1200 bullets on your ticket although like a lad said above all police forces are different but like i said if you cant justify needing all them bullets (and you dont really need that amount unless most of the 20 acres is packing with rabbits) then i cant see you getting it youll probably get a phonecall saying weel give you it but were cutting the bullet numbers, if your applying for all 4 because you dont know what rifle to choose from then i suggest you pick what rifle you want and apply for only that one as i cant see you getting a couple of rifles for the very same purpose on a reasonably small piece of land as for checking the land i think they only phone the landowner when you apply as 1 of my pieces of land hadnt been shot in years and not with a rifle and they just phoned the guy up and asked a few questions and that was it.

Ok thanks. i thought about putting 1000 as they are cheaper in bulk. I have applied for a 17HMR and 22LR. So I will just have to see what the FO says. Do you think i would get away with 500 bullets to buy?

Also, is anyone who knows about rifles willing to let me PM them. I plenty of buzzing questions but I dont want to keep making threads.

As a quick response 20 acres is unlikely to get a grant of all 4 calibres, possibly not even 2, but .22LR and .17HMR are probably your best bet. There are very few people in the whole country that actually have ALL 4 of the main rimfire calibres, simply because it is unusual to be able to justify all 4.

Regions are all different with ammo allocation as well, but one thing that is 100% for sure is, they will NOT grant you high volumes just so you can benefit from quantity discounts!

Do some homework and make sure you can justify (at least give a response) for everything you ask for.

There's nothing wrong with making topics to ask questions ;) What might be of benefit is to use the search function on the site, it can bring up some interesting old topics that make for good reading. But, it's always better to ask than to stay in the dark  Besides that, a question asked in the open can get you answers you may not have even thought of, that's the great thing about a forum.

Sako quads are lovely rifles, I have one in .22lr and have shot ones in HMR plenty of times. Always been accurate in my experience.

Why not phone your local Firearms licensing department and ask there advice most of them are fairly helpful and you will get a feel of what you may get granted.I shoot a 22 BRNO and although being a cheap rifle is extremally accurate and has accounted for thousands of rabbits.
