Ok ,I must have too much time on my hands. All started when the grand children caught a few newts in my pond and we popped them into a tank.Within minutes they were eating worms and popping out eggs. From watching them i realise that newts must have sensory organs in their bottom lips .I'm sure someone can shed more light on this.

The adults were back in the pond a few hours later but I've been watching the eggs develop (I know ..get a life!)

P.S Ok so it's obvious that I have no idea how to post photos in the righjt order but they covera sequence of abot 18 days .

Was it a Palmate female??...lovelly. I have bred all three species of newt over the years and they are a most amazing creature. Try and get the young some daphni to feed on or other such micro organisms.

they wouldnt have normally laid eggs so obvious, they "usually" choose a broad leaved plant such as water forgetmenot and curl the leaves over, sticking them together with a secretion.

great pics, its something i am going to build a good tank and try next year........

thanks for sharing them...cheers JD

Smooth newts but the colour variation and noticable features of individuals was something quite unexpected. There really is something "about" newts that people find endearing. Thanks for the comments and JD the feeding suggestions
