My night out!

Recommended Posts

Well it was a gorgeous day here last night (and again today), so as the sun was slowly sinking into the sea and the wife was at home I thought I would head down to my permission to see if “BUGS†was playing out!

I got all togged up and walked in the front room and asked the wife if it was ok (the point being I was already togged up hehe), she says “who said that†which lets me know that my camo gear is working well.

I walked over the road, its pointless going in the car as I can spit that far if the winds in the right direction, and headed down the croft. Stopping about fifty feet in to get the old rifle out and stash the sleeve, I sorted myself out, cocked and loaded ready for action.

Slowly stalking down the left hand side where there is a bit of cover, it took me about half an hour to get down a hundred feet, keeping my eyes peeled and occasionally scoping the ground out afore me. The feeling was great, the anticipation of free Sunday lunch was already making me hungry. The evening was still and a fresh breeze was in my face, which is always good.

About a hundred feet away while scoping the land I spied him/her, casually sat in the grass without a care in the world, its way too far to take any shot so I’m down on my belly thinking “your going to be Sunday dinnerâ€, slowly, very slowly crawling through sheep shit, I’m getting no where fast about five feet a minute, all I can think about is Sunday dinner and by now my mouth is awash with saliva. Slowly I raise my head above the grass for a look, “BUGS†is about seventy feet away now and has no clue as to its fate. I’m on my belly, slowly doing my impersonation of a worm, I’m getting there and I am picking a lot of shit up with me along the way. What seems like an eternity passes and I am absolutely knackered by now, squirming my way through the grass.

Eventually I am in range, BUGS is still there, the excitement is intense but I’m trying my damndest not to let it get to me. I line up and wait for the perfect shot, it seems like forever and the adrenaline is starting to get the better of me, I see my chance and slowly squeeze …….. BUGGER all happens, in the excitement I have forgotten to take the safety off @#$&*+@, the shot has gone and I know I am so close and the safety is going to make a noise, I try and cover it and release it as slowly as I can …. just the slight click and BUGS is away without me even getting to scope it.

Well there’s nothing more to do now as the sun slowly slips into the sea on the horizon, but roll a fag and sit and watch the sun slowly sink into the sea.

It certainly was an uneventful evening through my own stupid fault, but sat there in a deserted croft, in total peace, with the waves crashing, the sun sinking into the sea, watching the dew form on the tips of the blades of grass, I was actually quite happy and returned home with just a smile on my face.

Some of the joys of hunting isn’t always coming home with a bag, but just being out there. What the hell I had a good night, crawling about in sheep shit etc, then watching the sun go down was my quarry.

There’s always another day, another chapter and watch out BUGS I am going to get you.

Sorry folks no pictures of any dead BUGS as there was one to be had and I bolloxed it, I do have one of the sun going down though, enjoy :good:
