Gaz_1989 9,539
Hello all, Just after a bit of advice about a rescued dobermann bitch which my parents got 5 weeks ago or there abouts. Shes about 2 years old and from a dogs home where she was fed on any dry or tinned food they could get there hands on which was mixed up. She was fairly under-weight. We started feeding here what my last dog (EBT with skin complaints) was fed on, its a working dog food from a local farm type shop, its also wheat/gluten free, the EBT always did well on it so decided to carry on with it. However, last week she has started getting really dry and flaky skin (like dandruff) and her back leg at the top has got some fur starting to come away and leaving lumpy/scabby skin underneath. Im thinking a change in diet is needed but my parents WONT feed BARF, which i am almost certain would clear it up! What can you reccomend? Is there any way of making BARF sound a little more tempting to the parents? They dont like the idea of keeping loads of different meat in the freezer and the preparation and raw meat in the house etc etc. Could BARF be simplified at all? ie just feed a couple of aspects of the diet? Many thanks Gaz
Guest WILF
Some folks are set in there ways when it comes to feeding, nothing to be done about it..............try a good glug of olive oil all over the dogs grub at feeding time, and see if that works. You cant make raw feeding less complicated, if you get your food from a dealer like Landywoods, it comes ready minced in 1lb bags and you just thaw it out and tip it in the bowl...........thats is as complicated as it needs to be. Good luck with your rescue Doby, they make great companions............

Will try olive oil, never thought about it. Ive been giving her cod liver oil though. And yeh she is a cracking companion, and best guard dog ive ever seen. Are your parents vegetarians, Gaz? " Raw meat in the house " ? What other bloody meat is there? Anyway, 'Could BARF be simplified?' Absolutely. As I'm getting bored with hearing myself repeat; The whole deal's become a crowing contest. The aim is to come up with ever more complex 'recipes', to show You have made a more in depth study of all aspects of canine nutrition than the next dick in a nice jumper. Thus ye now get shit spouted along the lines of, " And half a cup of Korean brown rice. The dorsal flesh of one sardine. A one inch cube of pineapple. Three Lightly Steamed saw pimento beans and a f*cking cherry on top. " ! F*ck all that. Just give the bugger flesh and bone. By all means 'dress' it with some oil, apple cider vinager, what ever spikes ye personal artistry. But Don't complicate what is essentially dead simple. Regards all the stuff about bits of veg and so forth? Sure. When I prepare my own curries, my lot always appear like spirits and sit there awaiting their couple of bits of carrot. One of them always gets any left over rice too - the others don't, and it doesn't effect them. Eat a banana? Chuck the Dog a bit. Most Dogs like banana. Bottom line is Relax. Don't boil ye head over it and Make feeding the Dog well a chore. Open fridge. Remove chunk of meat. Chuck out back door. Get on with life. It really Is as simple as that
Neal 1,930
Yep; Ditch is right: it's as easy or difficult as you want to make it. One bit of advise for making it really easy is simply to buy trays of chicken wings as a starter but of course it depends on how "chicken out" you are. Good luck, once you've started you'll wonder why you ever fed anything else. Several hundred thousand generations of wolves can't be wrong.
Gaz_1989 9,539
Cheers Ditch and Neal. DS - When i said raw meet in the house, it was more the fact of her running round the house with a meaty bone in her mouth i was thinking, She lives inside and eats inside you see. Everything you say makes sense though, i will deffo be feeding my dogs raw, not sure i will be able to convince the folks though. Its a case of 'whatever the 19 year old son says is wrong'. To prove my point - i recently got the dog a strong stuff collar and lead, much needed it was too, she pulled like mad, flipped out of normal collars and has even snapped the cheap leather ones. But will my parents walk her on it??? Nope! because i suggested a strong stuff collar, they think its a bad idea! Ive just got the dogs best interests at heart, but what can be done. cheers to all gaz

craftycarper 0
As stated already it's as easy or as hard as you want it, i still feed mine vitalin but with allsorts mixed in with it. From minced rabbit, chicken, tins of tuna (without the can) pasta, rice family leftovers, tinned dogfood(yeah sorry), gravy's...hell lets face it you can even serve it up three weetabix mashed up in goats milk for breakfast if you want...two out of my three eat anything you throw at em, the other is fussy & finnicky, takes forever to eat and has to remove every morsel from the bowl onto the floor before it starts to eat, but hey what should i expect it's a bitch...blimey i've just read this through before posting and spotted the word morsel....now who can remember them ey....henry's wasn't it

BlueCoyote 0
i'm having a hard time convincing my husband that raw is better..... since he refuses to buy anything i have resigned myself to raising the meat myself. that is.... bunny, duckie, chickens, and what ever they manage to catch plus the big meaty bones from the hunters that drive by the house during the season. of course when resources run low i still cant get the husband to pick up a package of chicken quarters on his way home. no.... he brings in kibble. know what happens when my bulldog bitch eats kibble? well.. first she loses her hair up her back, under her belly, along the legs, not mangy but damn near it... then she gets the runs. never fails. kibble is BAD for her. the other dogs dont seem to do bad or worse with it. makes no difference to them. i have a little jack russell that PREFERS kibble. especially the kind with gravy(just add water!) she wont eat anything else. it will sit for days..... unless you leave your dinner on the table. she'll sneak it right out from under you. caught her on the dining table last weekend eating the hot dogs my sons left behind. As I type this, one of mine's over on my bed, eating a bone. I give that one what is effectively three lamb chops a night. In her bowl. She Always takes them out, one after the other, and retires to my bed to enjoy each one. And yes; The head end!
