FJager 0
Having met a genuine hunting Gsp breeder we invited them up for some shooting and for them to show how their dogs work, was a great day, seeing the dogs point and work in the field, we managed 2 pheasants, just to give me a demo of them in action. These dogs are dynamite, continually working and retrieving when need be, the handler just had total control over them. They also bought some Chesapeake Bay retrievers, these dogs are something else when seeing them doing blind retrieves just working of hand signals. Couple of pics anyway. Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
Nice one mate, The Gsp's are extremely good i'm cover such as that in your photo's. i shoot with a friends Gsp and he is excellent, still only just over two years old and great on snipe woodcock, and pheasent, the only problem is the snipe are plentyfull were we shoot and he tends to point at every snipe in the field......but excellent dog's with a good steady pace, and they never seem to tire, like the springers. Stabs 3
It was an excellent day and we shot a fair few bits and pieces. The GSPs were working very hard for a very meagre rations. We had intended to put a lot of birds up as they are always about. It's always the way when you invite someone on your permission though...no bloody birds! We had a 4 month old pup out for most of the day and it was keen as mustard. FJager...get those other pics up. The Chesapeakes were something else to be honest and hand on heart, if I was looking to be getting a dog, I'd seriously consider them. The fact they don't pack well makes them a bit of a handful though. Top day and top sport. Quote Link to post
kiwi 4
very cool. had some aussie gun mag editors over last month on our shoot, they had a blast, last week of ducks here but still got plenty of time to chase the roosters. how did they find those chessies and the aussie heat? lurchergrrl 1,441
Nice one FJ Those Chessies are nice looking animals but I've never seen one working. Quote Link to post
FJager 0
Cheers for the comments, SS do you havy any pics of the GSP working? Can you eat the snipe? LG the Chessy's really are awesome to watch, they are just so intense, apparently though, they are not real keen on working with other dogs. I have attached a series of pics of the owner putting his main Chessy through its paces on blind dummies, collecting them on hand signals, this team finished 5th I think, is that right Stabs, in the National retriever trials. As I am buying a GSP, we took them shooting and their field work and retrieving was first rate, the dog would not leave the trainers side to retrieve until he was told. Gundogs are knew to me and I had a ball working with them, Stab's has worked with them before so knew what to expect, all the same though we were both very impressed, must say though, his shooting was pretty dodgy. I will mainly be using my GSP on deer and small game with pigs thrown in at times and the most important issue is finding the correct dog. Kiwi, I don't think the coat is a real issue, to be honest, it wasn't that heavy. There are a lot of hairy Wolfhound crosses run in the QLD heat on pigs and the coat isn't really an issue. Also some pics of a 4 month old GSP pup and the dog we were using who has in the past won many awards. Edited June 23, 2008 by FJager Quote Link to post
FJager 0
A few more pics. Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
must say though, his shooting was pretty dodgy. There was something wrong with your shotgun....barrel was bent or something I thought the Chessy would be too heavy jacketed but apparently not. Very driven, very focused but definitely a one dog affair. Energy to burn and put the lab to absolute shame. Quote Link to post
Guest WILF
I am sure that I know the fella on the right, but that other fella looks a dodgy character. What an excellent little thread lads, really good piccys and a good read as well. Quote Link to post

Was a great day Stiffy as I am sure you are aware from our 0100 hrs message, should be some good sport for you blokes when you'se get out here. The CBR's are a bloody big dog and they won't take any lip from other dogs apparently. Quote Link to post
