Fish Or Amphibians, mate? I've kept both in garden ponds myself. Only, if ye keep fish in one then any tadpoles and newt lavae just become supplementary fish food.

I also found it a pisser, paying good money for some brilliant new fish. Popping it into the pond and never again seeing the damn thing! As ye seem to have worked out, strict filteration is one answer - like those people who keep Koi Carp in veritable swimming pools of crystaline water. But, again, it's all one way or nothing, isn't it?

Not to try and force my own preferances on ye. But I ended up finding it more pleasurable to have a 'natural' type pond and sit watching various frogs and toads do their thing in it. All the time knowing there were, and watching out for, newts.

I've got koi and goldfish. I also built a 35,000 litre koi pond a few years ago. Work out the litre capaticy of your pond and ensure the filtration is adequate or it will become a green mess. Lots of oxygenating plants, unless you put koi in as they will destroy it.

what do you think of the pre formed fibre glass how do you do the litres for 8x6x2ft would you say 2 foot is deep enough ?

2ft deep is fine for goldfish varieties but too shallow for koi. Just google volume calculator and you will be able to work out the volume. A fibreglass pond will be fine, nothing more relaxing than sitting on the edge of your pond feeding the fish on a summer evening

Some of the gardening magazines have features about ponds & stuff, have a look through then in tesco or somewhere to give you a few ideas
