Give it a go mate, makes men out of most lads, but Stab's failed this part, I have actually seen him squat to p#ss.

 

That reminds me of a time in Paradise in 2001/2002...a certain bloke decides to squat in the bushes when all hell breaks loose with the dogs on a boar

 

As FJager has said you do get time off which, depending on where you are, was mostly spent in pubs or trying to reverse the damage you'd done in the pub.

Unless your away on exercises or operations it is basically like any other day to day job, you are free to go as you please as long as you turn up to work on time.

You can be required at times to be on call, which is basically being able to show up within a certain period, generally within hours.

realdeal is this true? Dont mean to offend Fjager but you didnt say if you had any military experince or not.

they are all there to support the bods at the sharp end i.e. grunts

as for hunting i was lucky enough to have an officer in charge of our platoon with two Lurchers say no more

also when posted to Germany managed to do my "Jagdshein" or hunting permit that was the gateway in that country

done a fair bit of stalking up in scotland for part of the sniper course

Its what you make it.... sure basic is a bitch but past that it's ok and you will never meet a better bunch of blokes.

fieldcraft , escape and evasion, shooting clay and large bore rifles dont regret a minute ....... good luck

Those RA boys were crazy…the two subs looking after us were communists..I swear!

 

They were unfit lads too and beasted me and my oppo for kicking their arses in the runs. We had a massive Aussie sergeant with us who was the fattest thing you've ever seen in uniform! He struggled to get in the back of the trucks at times. Wasn't you was it?

 

 

 

Seriously though FJ, I know your eldest fancies the army when he's a bit older….would you encourage him to join the infantry? I know my family wanted me to join the RE like my old man and step-dad but I was adamant that I wanted to join the old family regt. Wouldn't you rather he joined a corp and got a trade? Mind you, given the media reports coming out of sandland this week, the Aussie Infantry aren't doing much over there! I feel sorry for the boys who have gone out there to do their duty and are denied a fair go by the suits in the corridors of power. I know our mutual "German" friend is just straining to get over there and I can't see him sitting on his arse counting beans and liking it. It really comes to something when they turn around and say they are ashamed of their uniform.

Thought I'd stick my tuppence worth in cos the Infantry boys are hogging the limelight. Been in REME (craphat, remf, al get it in first) 6 year and its not a bad crack at all. You'll get a trade with civvy qual's and apart from tours to the hotter places it is just a 40 hour week. Outside work, your times your own. The only thing thats going to put a dampner on your hunting is if you aint married and live in 'the block', you cant keep animals. Any other questions mate PM me and I'll do my best. I'm not a Sergeant Major or Major General retired!. Am in now and can give you the crack from a junior ranks perspective. ATB

Well to answer a few questions mate...

You can basically forget about the dogs for at least 2 years..You will never be home in basic training..Infantry 32 weeks, Other arms anything up to 16 weeks..Speaking as a combat engineer, you move onto your B3 phase two and spend 3 months getting smashed round surrey, then onto driver training in north yorks..at this point things ease a little..weekends your own, not much to do but guard, read and surf porn sites..then your loaded onto your trade course, where agin your head is battered all week with homework relevant to your choosen trade and you spend your days at basically a green college..then for the majority its a case of out to the field army..to wherever YOU are needed..not neccessarily where you want to go!!! Cyprus (if your lucky) , Germany, and even the uk postings (tidworth, Weymouth, Wimbish, Ripon) can be very far from your home..are you prepared to spend friday night and sunday night on the motorway for the sake of 24 hrs at home???

The army is not for everyone but you have to make it work for you..Screw the nut, listen to those around you and make your choice wisely..If you dont then do not expect them to be arsed weather you like it or not..after your Window of opportunity shuts , your in the green skin for 4 years.period.

Dont be taken in by what people say this say that, Personally I wouldnt be in 2 para for all the money in the world..But you can skin a cat more than one way ..Look at yourself, If you can run, Fight and have the balls to stand up and be seen when the world seems a very lonely place..Then the airborne or commando streams , ENGINEERS or infantry perhaps beckon to you..If not there are hundreds of great jobs in the army or if your more timid then the likes of the Reme, Signals, or the RLC would be more suited..Look at the job of AMMO Technician in the RLC in particular..Not the most macho job in the world..but in 12-15 years when your a Warrant Officer class 1 at Thirty years old who gives a f**k???

Dont buy into the army recruiters spiel, Do your own research and dont be afraid to push yourself..If you do one day, you might also too wear the wings of justice

yea your right there are jobs to suit every one in army , the paras suited me better than engineers as its a lot more soildering involved, which helped me move on too other things, which took me on to my present job on the circuit ie bodyguarding (i hate saying that word) but you got to look at your self and think what type of person are you and what would interest you, dont listen to recruiters they just fill you full of shit, adverture training ,sport, you might in some cores or regiments but not in para /marines so much ,solidering comes first,but hey thats what i joined for, just have a think what you want out of army and talk to people who are in. all the best

Yeah, good on you mongrel gutz, I wouldn't have trouble getting into your sister-in-laws (plural) knickers though.

 

The lad can choose what he wants mate, but it would be a proud day to see him get his skippy badge and serve under Deano, at this stage he wants to be a sniper, so will just encourage this, you know what he's like, loves all the secret squirrel shit.

 

The Aust. boys mate are protected by our government, they keep them out of harms way as much as possible, all this stems from Vietnam. I missed all that stuff this week, so not sure what units where making the comments, but you know what the media are like, SAS and 4 boys see serious stuff pretty regularly as do elements from the Battalions.

 

Look what happens though when something kicks off and the boys do get a chance.

 

One thing I can catergorically tell you Raider, don't join the Territorials, either go the whole hog or don't do it at all, toy soldiers mate and treated as required.

fair one boys but I can honestly say that without the INTIMATE close support eg Explosive entries, Force Protection , FAC, Artillery cover that the likes of 9 SQN RE, 7 PARA RHA, 59 INDEP. COM SQN AND 29 COM RA offer to the paras and marines , then they would not be the effewctive fighting units that they are..Dont get me wrong I love both branches to bits..we are the best army in the world. full stop.

Ive spent the last 17 and half years in the army mate and I personnally think that depending on what type of hunting you do and where you are stationed as you often get more chances than the average civilian hunter.

 

2 Years ago i was in the Salisbury area and i had permission on 26 miles worth of Artillery ranges to shoot over. It was packed with rabbit and general vermin. There was also loads of fox and other ground dwelling animals but to be honest i loved my shooting and bushing with my pat more than anything.

 

I have been back in Germany now for 2 years and where i am now there are lots of fox, wild boar, deer, rackcoon and mine martin. You see them nearly every day dead on the roads.

 

Ive completed my German Jag schine which is a hunting licence that you need to hunt in Germany. The problem that soldiers have these days is they are away lots in hot countries and when they are not away we are training for it so we dont always get the time that you all do, but we pick our jobs so i dont complain.
