jazz_11 5
well..... yesterday i got a phone call at about 8 and it was a friend of mine... a friend of his has found a hob in his back garden, do i want him.... well i went to view him and the guy himself had ferrets, 1 greyhound carrying young and an albino hob. But he did not have any space for the new one. so after checking him and he was pretty tame i decided i will have him. I was not sure what to do with my other hob, so i put them to gether and they were fighting and then my old hob locked onto his ear and that when i seperated them.. and now they are apart well for some reason the new hob, only likes me, no one else. he bit my father earlier on his finger and it was bleeding..... PLEASE DO NOT GET ME WRONG HE IS NOT A WILD POLECAT, HE IS A PET WHICH HAS OBVIOUSLY ESCAPED!!! well i was just wondering, what sort of diseases can they catch in the wild, as i do not know how long he was out it could have been a day or 10. he is a lovely colour polecat he is very golden and a i have a fealing he is going to be a great worker. I just want to know what sort of diseases can they get and how can u tell. I dont think he was in the wild for long because he does not have fleas or ticks. and like i say he is tame although he does not want to stop running... but he really is lovely.. also my jill after having a phantom pregnancy is now coming back into season she failed last time with my old hob, so i want to try her with the new 1 .... good or bad idea...?? cheers i will put a pic up of all 3 of them tomorrow... jazz Quote Link to post
sue 1
is he thin ,have diarrhea ,runny nose or anthing else ,if not i would keep him on his own for at least a week just to be on the safe side Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
i would never mix any new ferret regardless where it came from with my stock for at least 2 /3 weeks Quote Link to post
jazz_11 5
nope none of those symptoms,....... what about him biting my dad.... not just being with other ferrets. and the old and new hob were together for less than a minute in my lounge before i split them up.....because i could see it was getting nasty. so all in all do u think he is ok.... Kay 3,709
What makes you think somethings wrong though, lots off people get bites from ferrets & suffer no ill effects , taking any animal in is a gamble regarding some kind of underlying illness or condition, just settle him alone & see how it goes for a week or so, if the animal shows any sign off illness act accordingly Quote Link to post
Guest jojoamojo
Please dont breed off him, you dont know his history, and he could be ill, you dont want him infecting your jill, especially if she is a good worker have you advertised him as a lost ferret, his owner may be looking for him? the main things he could get are ear mites & tics, but i guess you knew that keep him apart for at least 2 weeks, he will be abit confused and in full rut too Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
It's the mating season. Hobs will fight. Ye Dad probably hesitated in some small way as he approached / handled the ferret, being unconciously less than 100% about the newcomer. That can cause them to bite. I shouldn't worry that the new hob will transmit anything to you, but quaranteen is always the best bet with a brought in animal of unknown origins. Quote Link to post

Either that or your dad might have had some smell on his hands as above keep him seperate for at least a fortnight . Quote Link to post
stubby 175
yeah, dont worry, I doubt he'll have picked up any disease from your dad Quote Link to post

Seriously though, he'll be fine, once the spring "rut" is over things should settle down. It's crap I know when you have problems and not enough accommodation to split everyone up. If no-one is getting brutalised, they'll cope. Kay and Stubby are great, just PM them. hope it works out. I once slept in the car with a ferret that was getting picked on, wasn't allowed in the house, and woke up with it inside my jumper, sound as a top. A friend of mine took it and all ended happily. jazz_11 5
yh he is lovely ad i just cant get over how curious he is, he is not like my other 2 he just wants to find things and go looking. hence the reason why i think he will be a good worker. I hae boxesin my room because we are busy doing it up and i let him loose in my room and he was straight in the boxes in one and out and then in another it was great to watch lol.... sorry to sound like a numpty just i was concerned because i had herd roomers of how they catch diseases but he doesnt seem to be a problem. cant wait to work him... what does everybody work jills or hobs? I have 2 hobs now and 1 jill but i think the jill is way to soft.. although i have never worked her. I am a bit unsure on what to do.. should i mate the hob with the jill and see if she catches and acytually has kits. but i dont think she will be a good worker which is why i dnt really want to be stuck with ferrets which are crap.... i proberbly will mate her.... but not keep the kits (sell them) also the guy i got the hob off 2 days ago, his jill is carrying young and she is a craking worker she is only small (really small) but not greyhound type and he said i can have as many of the young as i want. but i am sure that the jill i got now will look after them... when they are young But if i do have kits off him what do i do when mine has them, if she has them. in a way i am hoping she gets taken out of season but does not catch on again like she did last time...
