wabbithunter_15 0
Well today i checked a rabbit i had caught and given to the ferret on saturday evening, when i checked the rabbit all seemed fine until i was cutting the rabbit into sections and i opened up a portion of the leg when all of a sudden it was like i had cut into a pocket of maggots , there where around 15 and i couldnt believe it. The hutch is inside a concrete out house , how could this happen so quickly? Is there any way of preventing flies from entering or being deterred from the out house? Many thanks , Danny Edited May 5, 2008 by wabbithunter_15 Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
Remove any uneaten meat if you feed at night the following morning or if you feed it in the morning remove whats not eaten later that day , they can hatch & be crawling all over the meat in hours  Quote Link to post
stubby 175
only feed what the ferret/s can consume in one evening, its ok people that chuck a whole rabbit in, saying it will last three days in WINTER, but now is the season for flies, so my advice is cut the rabbit into portions, keeping frozen, but taken out the day before use to defrost, if your taking chunks out the next day, reduce the amount slightly Quote Link to post
wabbithunter_15 0
thing is i cant freeze the rabbits, mum wont let me, i was thinking of getting a chest freezer for the out house and running mains from the house? because i cant freeze them atm i have to give them the rabbit the day i get them During the summer the ferrets only get a few rabbits now and then due to me not ferreting much, they usually are fed on the biscuit stuff. il certainly use your advice and try and use smaller portions and maybe i can drop the rest of the meat i know i wont use to a friends or sumthing. lorelei0922 2
Tell your mum the rabbits are dead, they wont munch her pavlova lolI used to have the same prob myself when i was yunger".Get that out my freezer" lol If its a space thing.. fair enough ..mom's the boss after all.. but if its an eww... not puttin that thing in my freezer thing... try skinning it and dicing it up.. then lay it out on trays to freeze.. as it gets frozen.. toss it all into a zip lock freezer bag, not only will it be simple enough to pull out just enough for the day It will no longer resemble "that thing" nor take up nearly as much space. True you'll be missin out on the fur and head and stuff for the summer .. but save the liver and kidneys and heart and stuff and you've still got good ferret food. Good luck... oh and if you're looking for a chest freezer... try a post to your local freecycle site, thats what i did Quote Link to post
wabbithunter_15 0
its both space and eeeeew because she hates me hunting and coming back with rabbits, i have to gut the rabbit in the green at the back of my house and even then she nearly crys saying that hunting is cruel blah blah blah..im the first rabbiter in my family ya see and started last year hopefuly to raise my children to be the same , but back to the point, if i was to get a chest freezer to solve my problem how would connect it to mains power permenantly extension lead of some sort? and when i get rabbits i would usually just gut the rabbit and leave in kidneys lungs etc so all fur is intact. would putting some of that fly tape around in the out house reduce flys ? yano the tape stuff that hangs from the ceiling? good advice from all thanks for the reponse Quote Link to post
