Ferreting guns, 12, 20, 28, .410 etc??

To anyone who has done abit of ferreting over shotguns I am just wondering what you use? I have just got my first shotguns a 12 bore luigi franchi o/u and a £30 bolt action .410...cheap but fun lol. I am picking the .410 up next week so long as the dealer is happy it is sound to go.

 

So what do you use for ferreting? And what gun would you rather use out of the .410 and the 12?

I use a twelve bore handy but you have to let the rabbits get out a bit the 410's fine but carts are a bit expensive

Tend not to shoot over ferts unless its really required.

Just use my 12 bore but if I had a 20 think that would be the one I would take.

12, don't think id be coming home with many if i used a .410...!

I use a mixture of 12, 20 and .410 depending on how confident I'm feeling!!

The 12 is normally for rabbitting over dogs and I tend to use the 20 the most on the few occasions I shoot over ferrets, it gives you a good median I find, the cartridges are slightly more but bought in bulk they are not bad. I use the .410 on the odd occasion when the bury is in a enclosed space or there is not much room for the rabbit to run, the .410 is expensive to run but on the few occasions it comes out is becomes perfectly viable. For all the guns I use No.7 shot in 28gr(12B), 24gr(20B) and 14gr(.410).

Hi mate, I would think the 410 will be full choke, thus making it a bit difficult to use for close in action, though great for an evening stroll, where it'll kill them out to 30 yards or so. I'd opt for a twenty, choked imp and quarter, failing that a twelve choked the same, and I'd use fibre wads as that opens the patterns even more. The extra spread helps as most ferreting shooting is under 30 yards. for sitters, aim at their feet as most guns pattern slightly high. Good luck, and be safe in the heat of the moment. i use both mate but you have to give the rabbit a bit of ground before you use a twelve bore

Thanks for the advice, im not going to be using them for ferreting much as I love working my bitch but a few days a season would be nice. I did think a 20bore would be nice, I may look into getting a 20b sbs sometime, I do like the sbs's
