stevolad 26
It's around a year ago I made the 400 mile trip down to the South coast to pick up a 'proper terrier' for digging after gettin the green light from the missus. For those that don't know the pup, she is a rough coated chocolate patterdale off a hunt terrierman who took over the terriers from his old man, they have had the same strain of terriers for 35 years he reckoned, using NS's dogs as outcrosses when needed so she is bred from generations of good working stock. The parents are both proficient fox killers and very effective at their job on a regular basis I was told on the phone, no bullshit, no bigging up him or his dogs and very knowledgeable and honest about him and his line of work and of course his dogs. Sire Dam A further 3 phone calls were made, several emails bounced back an forth and we agreed a date for me to go down and see the last pup he had left which was a rough chocolate bitch, the one he was going to keep back himself but had decided to sell. After speakin to 'wor lass' we were all going to go down and the breeder offered us his caravan for the night or the weekend if we wanted on the sea front, which is damn hospitable in any mans book if you ask me....but we decided against it as the bairn was only 5 mnth old so 7 hours on the road at least was a big NO NO. Anyway, my doggin partener 'Boy Blue' was gonna accompany me down, help me with directions and more importantly keep me awake!! Happy days i thought so up I was at 04:30am and ready to rock an roll, got some munch in and gave 'Blue' a ring to get no answer, after half hour ringing mobile and house phone i eventually got the message and hit the road.....on my lonesome....... Made good time down the road and found the place, normal pleasantries and a brew and spent what seamed like an age listening to great stories of good dogs and hunts then out to see the dogs and hear a bit about them before meeting my pup which took me by surprise as it seamed like a brown fluffly blurr bouncing all over the shop, certainly full of life i thought. More tea and a sarnie for the road then off back through the country lanes to find the motorway and up to meet a fella in Bristol i'd been talkin to. Home for 18:00 and settled the pup before hitting the sack. As i said at the start I wanted a terrier for digging and that's it, the ones I had previously and have now apart from The Gypo had been bushing dogs and used for bunnies but this pup was gonna be kept for the red fellas Bred from the right stuff and going to be hopefully brought on right, I had and still have high hopes for her but time will tell. She's been out as much as possible and is getting keener everytime she's out, she has had a rag of a couple of things and just needs to bump into something. Next season she should prove her worth. I'm learning each time i go out and so is the pup, hopefully we can teach each other a thing or two and get some good sport over the next few years. Everyone needs to start somewhere and this is the start for me. Happy hunting Edited May 3, 2008 by stevolad Quote Link to post

stevolad 26
When I first got the pup and had her kenneled outside she was the strangest little terrier i had ever seen, really lifeless and morose so we brought her in for a bit of socialisation which made such a difference to her personality, she is absolutely brilliant now, still very submissive around humans, even my son which is important but wont take too much shit from other dogs! I had a few moments where i had to choke her off the lurcher as they used to have a love hate relationship but she's alright now, it was good for her to develop as she used to bob an weave like a little boxer - up an under grabbing the big dogs throat which is what i'd expect her to be like with Charlie . Thanks to Moorman1 for putting me onto the dog in the first place. He has a litter brother to Gypo who is shaping up very very nicely. Edited May 3, 2008 by stevolad Quote Link to post
