Remember he's probably not used to treats and if he is like any greyhound I've had he'll want to bolt any food down as quickly as possible. whole litters of greyhounds are often reared together for a long time so they have to eat their food quickly. Good advise, and will she let you near her main food, mabe with with you foot to start with just incase. It sounds like she will take sometime to be socialised and learn the ground rules. Don't let her get away with any thing but slowly, slowly. Is she alright with the neighbours cat? Quote Link to post

No she isnt cat friendly & is jumpy when i am out with her when she hears a loud noise , she does need lots of socialising this is becoming more evident now Quote Link to post
Guest WILF
A bash round the snout everytime the dog snatches..............a box of treats and no bash when taken gently............should take about 5 minutes to cure. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
NO need to bash: if the dog knows its wrong to bite the hand that feeds then offer the hand in a fist with the food inside your fist, knuckles facing the dog's jaws so it can't nose the food out. If the dog sits then give it the sit command, then say wait. If no sit then just position dog in front you you, offer fist and say 'wait' at the same time. Do not open fist if dog nudges hand. Don't expect the dog to wait for more than a milli second to begin with: its a greyhound and greedy and never been trained. Track dogs have very boring lives and food is the high point of the day: understand this and you can use the food thing as motivation for further training. Even a fraction of a second waiting will begin to instill into the dog's brain that it only gets the food if you say 'wait', then open fist very slowly and allow dog to take food. Also, try making the treat more boring: a bit of stale bread, rather than something really tasty, and I'd not give it treats of human food either until you have the snatching thing sorted. Whatever you do don't give the dog treats whilst you are eating, at any time. You eat first then feed the dog. It is the waiting for you to actually give the dog the food that creates the respect: the fact that YOU give the food when YOU choose to do so that is important. Never give the dog a treat unless it has earned it. Best if you can call the dog to you and tell it to sit first. Never let the dog come to you of its own accord and demand food: you are the one that decides when it can eat, at any time. Don't treat too often, and only when you are standing over the dog, to begin with. If you are higher than the dog that also creates a pack leader thing. If the dog tries to steal food from your hand, mouth or plate whilst you are eating: shut it out of the room until it has learned manners. Personally I don't give my dogs treats at all unless as a training aid with pups. If you rely too much on treats to win the dog's affection that's all you will do: win it with food, then, when you have no food it doesn't want to know. I know that's not always the case, but best to be aware of the potential for problems. Hope this helps. Edited to add: what words of command or discipline have you taught the dog so far? I always teach little pups not to chew my hands by saying 'No biting' and if they continue to chew, then a savage growl lets them know that I'm really pissed off. Try doing the same thing, but only if you feel confident that the dog will react in a submissive way: no point growling at an adult dog if it comes back with a bigger growl and a bite! and also, if you must give treats for treats' sake, only give after the dog has been fed and is less hungry Quote Link to post
