what type of rabbiting dogs do you keep

Recommended Posts

the best rabbiting dog i've had was a whippet/collie greyhound, fast and brains to burn but was very shy with foxes

The best Cross is a Greyhound/Collie (border Collie) because as you say you have the speed and brains supplied by the collie. Collies are the MOST intelligent of all working dogs. I have been hunting for over sixty years (including Poaching) and the collie cross is the easiest to train and they have a NATURAL instinct to control the quarry. They respond immediately to whistled instructions. When poaching they will circle the field and drive the quarry to gate nets or snares on command.

Good info My whippet X collie is a dream to rabbit with... shes way ahead of me in the'know how' and I watch her switch between her collie and whippet heads all the time. The collie head is like watching sheep penning and the whippet one is just speed. Shes totally got the game under control and it appears that shes directing bunny traffic for herself!

Spot On. A collie/Greyhound/or Whippet cross are a pleasure to watch work. Sometimes they out think to owner.

To be honest I think it's very more to do with the individual animal rather than the actual cross type. I think to say any particular cross is the best allrounder is a very sweeping statement indeed.

What quarry taken in your opinion would constitute a collie cross being an allrounder? Also in what regularity would said hound be expected to catch this array of quarry to be realistically mooted as "an allrounder" ?

I would say allrounder, would be pre ban deer, fox, rabbit, a colliexgrey would take them if

it is bred right. They can take the odd hare, but they are not really a hare dog.

The 1x collie grey is a good pot filler. :victory:

Well beat me too it Bird but yeah IMO an all rounder would have taken deer, fox, coney & puss but also as Bird pointed out a colliex aint exactly upto the job of taking hare regularly. As I've said thats just my opinion, I agree that its more the dog then the breed that makes an allrounder. But all I'm saying is that I think colliexgreys on a whole make a better all rounder then the other breeds out there.
