First Permission...

Hello all, not really posted much in this section since joining, usually spend my time in the lurcher section as im trying to gain information as getting a lurcher soon.

 

However my main activity at the moment is my air rifle.

 

I had my first air rifle at 13 and my dad always instilled the safety aspects and how to be responsible. He also instilled the laws and regulations about shooting on private property etc etc.

 

However when for my 17th birthday (2 years ago) i got my Daystate X2 sports and have spent the last 2 years trying to get some shooting permission but with no success. All i have managed is a few rats and maggies at my dads works.

 

However, i have now got my first permision! Its on a small farm, where they are having problems with rooks/maggies/crows etc pecking at the lambs eyes! They have got 150 acres and are also over run with rabbits so im going up tonight to have a look round.

 

Can anyone offer any advice as to what to do first? Where to 'set up base' or should i just mooch around? Should i say target maggies first? Or just go for whatever is there at the time?

 

Obviously i will respect all land/livestock etc.

congratulations mate. i am still looking for my first permission, with no luck

 

hope you keep the permission, as it looks to be getting harder and harder to gain any permission.

Cheers. It is really hard mate . Like is said i started looking at least 2 years ago. Ive done door knocking on farms. E-Mailing, asking at golf courses. Sending a 'standard' letter. You name it, i tried it.

 

I gave up looking really a couple months back and thought my age was holding me back more than anything (i wouldnt want a 19 year old lad shooting on my land in fairness) but finally it looks like i may be getting somewhere.

 

Keep at it mate and keep looking.

go have a little look around and see what you can get. but i would go in the day and have a look to see the area better. and where you mite think the best places are over there. and get the farmer a bottle of something it go's down well and shows him that you greatfull for the permission.

nice one fella its a great feeling when you get you first bit of permission. If i was you i would find out your bounderies then have a good look around and make a note of any footpaths etc just in case like. Carl

hi gareth .i was having problems like you trying to get permission.so when it was nice and sunny the other day i took it upon myself to take a typed letter offering my self

for pest control.and to my luck i got 2 new farms next door to each other so no travelling.anyway cut a long story short i think it helps to ask when theirs a bit off sun out and seemed the farmer had more time for me than when cold and wet.and obviously

they have been out in sun all day and seen the damage the little critters are doing.

anyway good luck have fun relax and enjoy the hunt

Well done Gaz enjoy it & keep the job right as I am sure you will because good shoots are hard to come by as I am sure you & everyone else agrees & once you get one it can lead to others.

Signs of Rabbits:

Clear runs

Droppings

Fur caught on fences

Burrows/Warrens.

 

If you find a clear warren then set up within about 25yards close to or under as much foliage as possible.

 

Birds...

Find a decent 'sitty tree' a tree birds use between flight lines to rest. You can put good bags together just waiting by a sitty tree.

 

Lay out a cut open rabbit carcass with guts hanging out and crows will soon come round and start pecking at it.
