Fox killer wanted

Recommended Posts

Ok I have a fox problem...I think. :icon_redface:

Could be a badger... :wallbash:

There are two holes that started out as rabbit holes under a rhodhedendron (if thats how you spell it?). The mother inlaw filled them in and trod it down to see if foxy was using said holes. Yes, he dug it out again - but! He didn't leave any tracks!

The holes are in such a position that the one recently dug out, is almost impossible to get a good look at, and the obvious one is still filled in.

Any road up! If it turns out to be charley, I can't snare cause of the cats. Airguns don't work on elephants. Sooooo... any one got any ideas and be willing to do the deed in Hampshire?

Of course if it turns out to be a badger i'm stuffed... :censored:

Cymag's been illegal for years now, mate.

Which quarter of Hampshire are ye in? That may help bring a decent and experienced Terrierman to the surface. That's what ye could use, in that situation. First and foremost, he'll be able to tell if it's fox or badger. If the latter? Ye truly Are stuffed.

Well that shows how long I've been away from it all huh? No more Cymag... Bummer.

I am in the area around Petersfield, about 20 mins north of Portsmouth if any one can help.

Cheers all.

Buy some builders sand and put it around the entrance to the hole say a meter squared of sand then you will be able to see the tracks clearly and see whats occupying the holes. of course thats if you can distinguish between badger and fox tracks

Badgers are 'low slung' - if you can find any hair around the holes, roll it between your thumb and forefinger; if its soft, its not badger, if it doesn't roll smoothly (badger hair is triangular in section), it definately is a badger.

Ian was that aimed at me ? " the last sentance is unneecessary and confrontational"?

I didnt mean any malice in it i meant it because i couldnt distinguish the difference if you paid me. some people know through experienceand some dont its just one of those things

No offence taken Ian, but thanks.

The hole is right under a tight rhodedhendron so I can't get to it. The ground is pure red sand and still no tracks or droppings.

There are no marks on the nearby trees which often accompany a badger sett. Sheep in the field over the wire fence so dogs are out I'm afraid.

I like the propane sugestion if a little drastic at this stage!

I can track any animal in britain and quite a few from other countries also, so no probs identifing tracks.

I will build a fox trap (cage), as the squirrels I kill are all being taken at night. If its a badger I can hide in a tree and release it, (once saw one with rabies abroad and won't go within a hundred yards of a live one! Bloody scary things.) if its a fox...

Thanks for all the suggestions though guys.

And I too think ray mears knows his stuff.

You obviously mean to use the lurchers to flush it to a gun then..........

If it's badgers, there'll be bedding chucked outside every night or so.

Avoid gas, its a bloody horrible and un-natural way to kill something.

Do what Ditch said, and ask an experienced terrierman to take a look.

Good luck with that!

Don't worry I wouldn't gas it. I don't use gas at all.

I was only kidding about the propane!

Nope. Fox trap build coming up, then get a man in with a heavy duty rifle. 222 minimum. Of course the ricochet could be fun...
