your obviously better to go with proven stock, peronally i would, but i do think some breeders play up the 'working stock' and 'proven lines' thing too much. Ask a professor of biology how much working parents actually affect the gene-pool and you'll get the answer. at the beginning, all dogs were working and unless traits like hunting ability have been purposely bred OUT of the dog like some show breeders have done for different reasons, most dogs can be trained to hunt.. even if they are crap at it

you can put all the time into a dog and im a great believer in you get out of a dog what ypou put in but if it doesnt have it it doesnt matter what you put into it but everybodys standards are differant if you want a dog just to catch a few and your happy thats the main thing .On the other hand if you have high standards and want a dog that is a good un good blood is one of the most important things .

good tried and tested blood is the only way and a clever understanding of your chosen qaurry helps as much as breeding the best bred dog in a unexpierece hands or some eejit will not catch a rabbit in a phone box, why would any body out there want to by of untried stock when if they wait and plan there pup, they can get a good head start with good qaulity pups etc all the best

wilxster it sounds to me like you are in a very fortunate position where you are able to start your own line of lurchers.Just think about it, won't cost , 4 of the best breeds to start, the pups wont be the best there is so give them to your mates and keep back a bitch and breed that to a g/hound /whippet.The pups from that will be much better quality,the possibility's are endless and most important of all YOU will learn along the way.I know what i would do and it wouldn't be taking notice of a load of pikies taking the piss.Do what you want to do and enjoy your dogs
