Young Everywhere

Well first nice day of this year and it was great to be out with the sun on our backs. But things didn't turn out to as far as the Rabbits were concerned. First burrow  a dig, not too bad two foot, but a half grown one. Then the next just one at home then more young and two more kills. Early for half grown Rabbits, we always get a few but this many this early on.

Still its was lovely to out for a change with out getting wet.

The farm collie always follows us out and will mark but then sits next to the ferrets.

I love a days ferreting. Can't beat that sense of a anticipation you hear that rumbling below your feet.

Thats what got me hooked over 60 years ago. I nagged my father to take me out when I was a but he was reluctant, as I supposed it was his space and they could bugger off to the pub after. Then one day he said yes. The first Rabbit I saw was when I place on a mound of dirt about a meter high surrounded by nettles higher than me and about a meter from the hedge. About 20 meters from where the action was but told to watch this one run net on top of the hedge and to grab the Rabbit if it got in it. I just stood there eye glued to that net and sure enough a Rabbit came up the hedge and was in the net. I stepped forward managed to grab the Rabbit but I was down in the nettles as I fell at off the mound. I never let go and felt ten foot tall as I was lifted out. lol.

Then later under some old hazel hedge I heard for the first time a rabbit rattle under ground. I remember looking up at my father he whispered Rabbit, with that it bolted at my feet. I dived on it and was hanging on when my father landed on top of me.

From that day I was sold on ferreting and nagged and nagged for my own ferret, which I did get the following summer.
