One of my old mentors, Jimmy, bred and ran Deerhound crosses with John Nuttall, and through him I first met Brian. Jimmy was a tennant farmer in Halsall, on the edge of Altcar estate. His belief was that the best came out of a Deerhound dam, to a coursing greyhound dog. This brought size down and produced a more agile animal behind a hare. They both had a breeding programme together. Those bred out of a Deerhound dog were almost always for sale, those out of the bitches were ran on and gifted. They both ran matches back then, Jimmy used to tell of how his dogs almost always bettered John's and anyone else's on Altcar. They were local to the land, and were running on it daily. The money he made was a massive help on a tennant farmers wage. Sadly his coursing came to be a problem, as the Keepers on Altcar were complaining about his activities. He lost the farm, and his family forced to move to Ormskirk, his dogs had to go.... Quote Link to post
