Deerhound X

going back a good few years now i used to buy deerx greys in the old and exchange and mart, 15 pounds a pup from john nuttall who was a brother to brian nuttall terrierman. they had blood in them called enterkine damn good stock but that was back in the very early 70s, sadly people like john and alan wilkinson  another renowned deerhound man are history now, true dogmen.

Alan Wilkinson only coursed with his in a club apart from that did nothing else with them.No where near what we did with them.He is the only man my mate charged to line his bitch as no one liked him.He was an ignorant man and looked down his nose at to many lurcher lads.

i agree with what you say lurchers,alan used to be a slipper at pure deerhound coursing events, and he knew his stuff, but saying that he was well regarded within the pure deerhound commmunity, is he still alive remember him long time ago.

One of my old mentors, Jimmy, bred and ran Deerhound crosses with John Nuttall, and through him I first met Brian.

Jimmy was a tennant farmer in Halsall, on the edge of Altcar estate. His belief was that the best came out of a Deerhound dam, to a coursing greyhound dog. This brought size down and produced a more agile animal behind a hare.

They both had a breeding programme together. Those bred out of a Deerhound dog were almost always for sale, those out of the bitches were ran on and gifted. They both ran matches back then, Jimmy used to tell of how his dogs almost always bettered John's and anyone else's on Altcar. They were local to the land, and were running on it daily. The money he made was a massive help on a tennant farmers wage. Sadly his coursing came to be a problem, as the Keepers on Altcar were complaining about his activities. He lost the farm, and his family forced to move to Ormskirk, his dogs had to go....
