sounds like you have some nice older gear there bud....i come across a store that sold anything and everything second hand whilst on vancouver island....my kind of store i had to take a look, older rods but not my kind but i did spot an old garcia/mitchell 330 (the one with the flick up bail arm) on the shelf....he wanted $40 bucks for it, being english i knocked him down to $25...lol

i stripped it down when i got back...new grease/oil and worked a treat...not quite as smooth as a new reel but a firm smooth but in your hand it felt better quality than a new one...i also picked up an old garcia/mitchell 206 which i did the same to.....

and again i picked up an older baitcasting abu reel that sits on my steelhead rod, thats a nice reel....i still have 3-4 garcia/mitchell 600 and 602 multipliers that work just as nice now as when they were new....

love shops like that , there’s one near me that has secondhand gear and you can sometimes find some real bargains there . Never seen the Mitchell baitcasters but older gear is just better made than most new gear . My mate picked a Mitchell 330 otomatic up a couple of years back from a carboot sale , cracking little reels . I actually picked up a Garcia Mitchell 300 with 3 spare spools the other week from Bolton carboot for a tenner . I’ve serviced it but it needs new line on it before I use it . Old fishing gear is the only reason I go to carboot sales and it’s surprising what you can find on them . My mate picked up an old Abu cardinal 33 up for a fiver that he gave me that’s worth a fair bit and it’s one of the places I regularly get the closed face reels from

picking up a Garcia Mitchell 300 with 3 spare spools for a tenner is an amazing deal...you can go on a Garcia Mitchell web site an see what year it was made, i think there is a code number on the reel to find out.....im not to familiar with the Abu 33 but it looks in decent shape though...would that have been used for spinning? also it looks like a 70`s early 80`s.....

There’s a very faint code on the reel foot of the Mitchell and I think it’s a 1976 one  . The Abu 33 was made in December 1974 and the code is 741200 and is the very first version from the sought after 8 month original production run and runs like a Swiss watch .

They were spinning reels and came in 33 -44-66 and 77 sizes with the latter 3 being fairly easy to find but still bringing decent money . The 33 is a lot harder to find and the original version run being only made for 8 months in 1974 brings top money . There’s an original one on eBay at the minute for £814 . Even the later versions and the repo versions bring good money with prices on eBay from 150-500

There’s nothing worse than crowded fishing, I’d rather walk miles than fish near someone if possible. The groundbait approach is only something I’ve done in the last few seasons after trying groundbait feeders for barbel and noticing the dace were straight on it and the ones I caught were bigger fish . Previous to that I used to use 4-6 pints of maggots and feed heavily to try and feed the little ones off .
That daiwa rod will be pretty good even compared to today’s gear love older gear for trotting , my reels are closed face Abu 505’s and 503’s from the 60’s and 70’s and my centrepins are Jw Youngs rapidex and grice and Youngs gypsy d’or from the same time .
All my float rods bar 1 I use for tench are mainly 80’s by daiwa , dam , tricast and map Dave Harrell with most being spliced tip and they are all way better than modern rods for that type of fishing so much so I sold my expensive 14&15ft drennan acolyte ultras and went back to using rods that I pick up for £10-30 . I’ve also got an old little dam quickstick swing tip rod with a threaded end eye that I use for roach and skimmers occasionally.

MAP Dave Harrel rods are cracking, got a couple here...also an original Nomark Titan 13ft match rod, it's actually a proto type that was gifted to me from the bloke who designed them (Geoff Salisbury) he was a very good friend of mine and my first ever boss, he's no longer with us but I've loads of good memories of him..absolutely top match fisherman and someone who taught me loads, not just about fishing...

The map I’ve got is in surprisingly good condition for its age and it’s the version with unlined rings . I believe they were built on Harrison gti blanks .

I’ve never had a one of the normarks and still bring very good money . And everyone who uses them say they are at least equal if not better than anything on the market today . The titan-avenger and microlight are rods I always look for at car boots but still not seen one yet . They’ve just done a re release of the the 3 rods and they say they are as good as the originals but there’s not much info showing the actual rods and it just seems to be teasers

Geoff went on to design Carbon-tek rods, which were cracking rods but lacked the nostalgia of the Normark rods and imo the Normaks are the best... I've also got the Normark 11ft multi-quiver in the rod bag and the Normark 13ft heavy feeder (somewhere?)... I worked in Exeter Amgling Centre as a youngster which Geoff owned, he regularly took me fishing with him, up to Evesham on the Avon mainly, I'd sit and watch him fish the river matches.. I wandered off to watch Dave Harrel once, and got a bollocking off Geoff when I got back to his swim... "you'll learn nothing more sat behind him than you will sat behind me" lol... I was 17 at the time...soaking it up..lol

He came to my sons fishing party for my boys 7th birthday (he's 19 now), he turned up as his son (Kev) had told him i was down a local water trying to get ten 7 year  lads and one 5 year old girl (my daughter) fishing, fed, entertained etc... he sat with my daughter (bollocked me on the way I'd set her up, nothing changed,) and I loved him being there, given his time...he was a top man, top top angler and a good friend...plus he designed the best coarse fishing rods ever imo...
