My thing was always build a portfolio of companies and contacts, do a decent/reliable job and then know your worth. I'd move for a couple of quid on the hour and if I didn't want a job I'd say the rate was too low , to maybe help someone else negotiate , certainly smaller companies can appreciate the value of someone who's productive. I worked with guys that don't do a day's work in a week there's plenty in the game some, that bounce around the country , or go under the radar on big jobs Occasionally the better paid jobs are awful , I've finally managed to work for someone I get on with , go fishing with and pays well, but I'm expected to be dropped on a job and get it sorted so it's swings and roundabout. My first experience of an agency promised me it was 3-6month contract , left a permanent job to be told there was only two weeks left on job, it went longer and lead to other work but it was a sharp lesson, I treat them with the distain they deserve I interrupt the sales pitch ask rate and then say no thanks I work for x amount, but that's cost me at times and there's a couple of jobs I'd wished Id take just for the experience one was making bespoke BBQs lol
Goly 1,823
You are talking about umbrella companies, they not only charge you admin fees, you also pay two lots of national insurance. I've been told, if you see a job on umbrella, deduct about 14% straight off the rate and that's about what your true rate is.

Many agencies use umbrella companies, people have come unstuck 10 years after the fact find out the umbrella never paid their tax. They do seem to have died off a bit now , I just go cis with deductions made at source , two companies pay me gross but I'd rather deducted.

The fact we pay tax on our wages should mean we shouldnt have to pay tax on anything else or we need to move to a gross payment and we sort our own out every year across the board
Qbgrey 4,250
If we worked out total tax on our wages I reckon it’s 50% they take overall of our lives
