The Sporting Agent 0
The guy that getts my vote is Gerald Durrel; the guy is a legend. For anyone who doesn't know, read up on him and you'll see. The muppets on the BBC these days spout a load of liberal rubbish, the likes of Titmarsh etc....

Very interesting, talked about his fall from grace at the BBC (not PC enough).....

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Jack Hargreaves. Nice one Ditch, what about Phil Drabble also? What about " Romany and Rag ", mate? No, I'm just going on my own perceptions. I remember how Jack Hargreaves had the english nation glued to their screens, every week. Prime Time. And all he ever did was show us what was going on in the countryside. No agenda. No message. No judgement. Just, " Have a look at this ..... ". And that's how the british public percieved things beyond their homes. A bit like Bellamy or Attenborough enthusing about the Galapagos or the Serengetti. But Jack showed us the british countryside; Simply as it was. And he presented it in a matter of fact fashion which precluded " Irate of Croydon " getting irate about. Drabble? Differant creature entirely, in my view. I enjoyed a few of his books enough - but I enjoyed some of Plummers a lot more. Phil Drabble was just too trenchant for my tastes. (Maybe a single sided 'Personality Clash' brought about by my own 'persona'? ) No. Drabble was never really my cup of tea. Maybe why he was latterly relegated to his job of burbling about Sheep Dog Trials? Frankly? I can't help thinking that Drabble got his exposure through the 'Old School Tie' network. Hargreaves made it because he was just a natural.
The Sporting Agent 0
Some good names mentioned here; but would most people have heard of them? I'm talking about people that have brought the countryside and its way of life, ecology, geography to the public domain, who have shown Mr&Mrs Avarege what its all really about. Not neceseraly those who promote or produce work specificly for country sports enthusiasts. Clarissa Doixon-Wright? Maybe another?? Vinnie Jones?......maybe not eh? Mike Robinson? Max Hastings? I guess my vote still goes to David Bellamy; but more recently some of the guys above have done their bit; there are no real Naturalists promoting the real countryside to the mass public any more, its all about food, wich guys like Clarisa DW and Mike Robinson leading the way explaining about game and where it comes from; almost as if the media don't want to show the real countryside, but by virtue of showing cooking have to have some element of where the food comes from; and thats about as close as we get to "countryside"................... Neal 1,930
I'd vote for Jack Hargreaves too, and not just because he died on my 25th birthday. Edited February 2, 2008 by Neal
Bagpuss 0
yes Jack Hargreaves was the one, I was transfixed as a kid,his programes were brilliant. However today the only way it seems to be acceptable to show country sports and rural life is if its based around getting quality food: ie Pot kiln with Mike Robinson,Wild Gourmates, Hugh FW and even Jamie has shown lamping and shooting. But apart from that route its not PC enough for the tv. As for that Johnny Kingdom its about as interesting as Cbeebies.
Gin 503
Jack Charlton " Jacks Game" was the best for the Country Sports in the 80s, but Jack Hargreaves also.
