farlap 19
one of our local bunny huggers and rabid antis, has for years been suspected of releasing dumped foxes because over the last 6 years we have often found big numbers of foxes wandering from her woods to our fields, looking vague and disorientated. Anyway...... last week we decided to take a closer look at her woods...and.... discovered a massive purpose built pen .....full of foxes so....any ideas what we can do about it? Is it even legal???? My OH is all for going down at night and releasing them all but im more for doing something more permanent....legal ofcours
farlap 19
get a good bullx or just a good bull no need for speed but in a way her being "humane" is atually being very creul becuase the foxes dont know where the hell they are and dont know what too eat becuse they are from the town mainly its illegle too release them i think but its ok too keep them as pets i would though kill them or let them out and shoot them on your own lands then its good and legle i know mate.....no chinese restaurants or garbage round here for them to feed on...i think she just turns them out every now and then and feeds them for a bit until they wander off (and then we shoot them) but im really keen to know the legaility of what shes doing...anyone know? J Darcy 5,871
There are many fox sanctuaries dotted about and they do release foxes. This is all well and good if said fox is a rural country fox, at least it has some chance of survival...but im afraid a town fox will starve ,...or be killed.....sadly these people will not be told.... and i do speak from first hand experience..... Don't get me wrong, i am not against foxes being released back into the wild, for certain reasons, but a little knowledge of the animal is needed....and certainly not just thrown out of the back of a van......dumping city foxes in the countryside is signing their death warrent.....and its cruel too..... Darcy I fully agree......but....is it legal to release them? Would love to drop her right in the sh1t as shes quite high on local council and also on the National (mis)Trust with whom I have big issues over their stance on stag hunting. Would be great to be able to show that one of their head honchos was breaking law!!!

The likes of the Grey squirrel, etc etc which are non native cannot be released into the wild. There is also nothing illegal about a fox "sanctuary" as long as it complies with all the usual H&S etc issues. Edited January 30, 2008 by Deker
Tallyho 181
i think they just should all be destroyed, fox's aint ment to be kept penned up.
john b 38
I think the crux of it is that they can be released but cannot be 'relocated'; i.e. you can take a fox away to treat it for accident, mange or similar but it should then be released back to it's original location. I can't find anything stronger than 'should' written anywhere offical yet, although the National Fox Welfare Society web site does state that relocation is illegal. DEFRA / Natural England has a couple of interesting data sheets on this, one on URBAN FOXES and one on RURAL FOXES. A couple of interesting quotes: "The removal and release of trapped foxes elsewhere is not recommended on welfare grounds and should not be undertaken unless the landowners in the release area agree to such action." "Foxes do not make good pets. Sometimes young cubs are found apparently abandoned; these are best left alone as more often than not the vixen is close by and will soon find them. Foxes are wild animals and, even if hand-reared, readily revert to their wild habits. Few people have the space to accommodate adult foxes adequately and, owing to their territorial nature, it is very difficult to release a hand-reared fox into the wild. " I think if you could prove foxes were being shipped in and then released, particularly on your land, you could make a case of some sort.
J Darcy 5,871
I could be wrong but i beleive there is something in the law that deems it illegal to release "vermin" back into the wild. Though i could be very wrong.
dickyboy 1
i think theres a clause somewhere saying once a animal is in captivity it cannot be released but is often overlooked where native animals and indeed any animal is concerned, if your a member of basc or ngo give them a call, they are always helpful and up for getting one over on the antis
