The Tally Ho Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 3rd September 23.
As the sun broke through the clouds early last Sunday morning, with our dogs fed and watered, we headed off to the city of the 7 Towers, Ballymena and the venue for the Tally Ho Dog Show and Race day. And what a memorable day that was.
As we arrived at the venue the atmosphere was electric. Cars and trailers rolled up with dogs in tow and very soon the field was filled to capacity. With the sun shinning down in abundance, show organiser Peter Morgan was scurrying around making sure everything was in place, and by noon it was evident once again the Tally Ho dog show was in full swing.
As I moved around the show I had a yarn with Mick Mc Cormick and Lorna and Paul Boyd at their Country Sports stands.   Both these men had plenty of good quality dog leads and loads of other country sports gear on their stand.
The buzz around the Ferret ring was unreal, as judge Katelyn Mc Kenzie announced the Champion Ferrets of the Day. Katelyn you did a magnificent job for your young years and picked some really nice and worthy  Champions.

Now to the part of the show I love, yes Niall O Cloghans Terrier Maze. What a great Country Sport this is. The Maze is a terrier mans dream and allows their prized terriers to get some practice in for the months ahead, and a bonus winning a trophy to take home with them.  Here are the Terrier Maze Results.

      2/ Rose
      3/ Barley Banger with Ace.
The we people were out in force on Sunday, and as I had the pleasure of judging the childrens Handling class  all 42 boys and girls filled the ring with their canine companions. Peter Morgan made sure every child got a goody bag and a medal for taking part in the class.   Peter also laid on 2 bouncy castles so these children could play away on the day to their hearts content.  Some tired we feet on Sunday night and some stories for their teachers on Monday morning.

      Whippets : Colin Tucker
      Lurchers :  Shay Boggs
      Terriers  :   Ciaran Fullen
      Bullys :        Karla Wilson
      Strong Dogs: Peter Morgan
      Pets : Joanna Relf Lee
Childrens Handling :  Margaret Mc Stay
JP O Hagan : Ladies & Gents Handling Class
The Lee Family and myself go back many, many years in the doggie world, to many to mention. Joanne, Matthew and the daddy Matt, you ran the racing with precision, experience and dedication and everything went like clock work. Joanne Relf Lee thank you for all the results.  You and your family are a pleasure to work with and long may it continue.
And Finally, Finally, As usual, a lot of hard work and planning went into organising this brilliant Dog Show and Race day in Ballymena. This would not of been possible if it were not for one very important person in the Canine world.
Yes Peter Morgan it is you I am speaking about. I cannot find enough words in my vocabulary to praise you for the   hospitality, generosity and  kindness you showed to me and the good Canine folk at your show on Sunday.
Along with your helpers Conor Creagh and Caitlin Hughes you have put the Tally Ho Dog Show and Race Day firmly up there on the map with the Great and the Good.
The Cups, the Trophys and Raffle prizes you awarded for Winners and Champions at your show were beyond reproach. For a one man band Peter you are truly tops. All the hard work and sleepless nights paid off, and many thanks for an excellent show and a really memorable day and long may it continue.
Thank you so much for the beautiful presentation you made to me on Sunday, it has taken pride of place in my sitting room.
To close my report on this great day out for every body, the good Canine folk again contributed to Charity by buying Raffle tickets for the Raffle. Peter Morgans giving hand was giving again.
Peter presented Joanne and Paul Owens with £500 on the day, the proceeds from his raffle on Sunday for their Charity The Royal Victoria Liver Support Group, who helped them through their darkest days, when their little son Cathan received a liver transplant. What a worthy cause.
Tally Ho, You achieved what you set out to do 100%, and I know in my heart of hearts I will live to be at another Tally Ho show again in 2024.
To we meet again God Bless.

The Mc Grath Lurcher Racing Club Dog Show and Race Day, Sunday 27th August 23
The town of Carlow was founded by the Normans in 1207, making it one of the oldest counties in Ireland. Nestled in the middle of this beautiful ancient County lies the traditionally rural village of Ballinabrannagh with its very convenient proximity to the M9 motorway. This was the venue for The Mc Grath Lurcher Racing Club Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 27TH August 23.
As the strawberry alarm clock rang out loud and clear at 5.30am, with the dawn chorus from the dog pens chiming in our ears, flasks and sandwiches packed into the boot, very soon we were on our way down the motorway to Co Carlow,  arriving  at our destination at approximately 11.00am.
As we approached the venue, it was very evident the popularity of this show with a large crowd already in the field.  All the usual show goers of yesteryear were there and also a few new trainees. The weather was pretty good all day with the exception of a few light showers.
The show rings and racetrack was in immaculate condition despite the inclement weather of the previous days. The racetrack especially was mowed razor tight to the ground and as flat as a pancake. In my opinion one of the best prepared racetracks I have seen this summer.
This was all down to the excellent  workmanship of Michael and Jack Mc Grath. These two men put their heart and soul into this show ground to make it comfortable for all the good Country Sportsmen and women of the Canine world, and that they done in abundance.
The entire Mc Grath family was out in strength on Sunday, with my favourite, Mammy Mc Grath in the middle of them. I have great admiration for this lady, who reared her 15 children in hard times, and all have grown up to be good citizens, and all have given her back so much  unconditional love.
With no Game Fair this year, Albertj Titterington asked the Mc Grath Lurcher Racing Club to organise and run the Red Mills Master Mc Grath, the Feedwell Mick The Miller, and the 42nd Championship show and Racing classes. And this they done with meticulous planning, and what a success that was.
Niall O Cloghan was there with his now ever popular Terrier Maze. The Maze always brings all our huntsmen together in competition and to show off their prized winning Terriers.
The raffle as usual always generates a buss of excitement at our shows and Sundays raffle was no different. Some lovely prizes up for grabs on the day.
It was nice to see all our little boys and girls in the childrens handling class showing off their faithful Canine breeds in the show ring and also on the racetrack. These little people are our Country Sportsmen and women and show organisers of to morrow. Some proud mothers and fathers watching their little ones walk round the ring and receive their goodie bags. I am sure there were some sleepy heads on Sunday night.
Time passes so quickly and very soon it was Show time.

Finally, many thanks to the brilliant Judges on the day
Whippets: Ella Thompson/ Lurchers : Leigh Thompson/ Terriers : Joyce Scott/Strong Dogs : Chontelle Mc Meekin/ Bullys : Gail Ross
Your judging skills were honest, efficient and impeccable. Your duties on the day were carried out to perfection and many thanks for that.
And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Mc Grath Family for a brilliant show and race day. The saying is that behind every good man is a good woman and Biddy Mc Grath you definately fit that picture. Biddy, we would have been lost without you on Sunday. Along with  Michael and Jack, you put a lot of hard work in behind the scenes to make this day most enjoyable for everyone.
Your whole family was so welcoming, and made us all feel at ease in your native Co Carlow. Thank you so much for the lovely presentation to me on Sunday, it was so unexpected and very much appreciated.
As the end of the day was approaching, it was time to say good bye to Balinabrannagh for another year and be on the road again back to Co Armagh and the place we call home.
Many thanks Mc Grath Lurcher Racing Club for the memories, and God willing, we will all be back in 2024 for another great window in Country Sports.
To we meet again God Bless.

THE GLENSHANE WORKING DOG SHOW AND RACEDAY SUNDAY 20th AUGUST 23 ( in aid of RVH liver support group )
As dawn broke on Sunday morning the 20th August 23 with a good breakfast in our bellies, we headed off to the beautiful Maghera countryside and the venue for The Glenshane Working Dog Show and Race Day. And what a day and venue that was.
Safe to say this was one of the best venues I have been to this year.  The grass was immaculately cut with plenty of room in the show rings and on the racecourse. As this was a first time show and run for a very special cause and charity, it was a credit to the organisers.
The Gods were on our side as the sun shone all day. As the morning progressed into noon, cars and trailers with dogs in tow filled the field to capacity. The craic and the banter was in full swing amongst the huntsmen and women and all with one thing in mind, a great Sporting day out in Maghera.
The we people were there enjoying the day in the play trailer, bouncing around to their hearts delight. Some very tired children on Sunday night.
Barry Kelly was there with his canine athletics and what a show within a show this guy serves up. I have great admiration for this man as he has added a great something that was needed in the Canine world. Some great dogs there in fine form and clearing every hurdle put in front them. Well done Barry.
Very soon it was Raffle Time, and as usual the raffle generates a lot of excitement around the field with some great prizes on offer. John and myself won a bag of meal and a few hunting plates. Some happy punters went home with armfuls of goodies.
At this point praise must come the way of none other than the lady of the manor herself, Joanne Owens our continuity announcer for the day. I must say Joanne you done a wonderful job keeping everybody well informed on all the happenings. You were so much appreciated
Time passes so quickly and very soon it was show time.

      Congratulations to all above winners
And Finally, May I take this opportunity to thank the judges on the day for a job well done. Judging is not an easy task, but you carried out your remit well on the day.
Again Peter Morgans giving hand never ends. Peter helped out Glenshane Dog show by giving them his PA System for the day and many thanks for that. It was so much appreciated.
The Raceing at this show was run and organised by the McGrath Lurcher Racing Club and as usual everything went like clockwork. Michael/Jack/ Terry /Anthony and Biddy your efficency was beyond reproach and thank you for that.

And Finally, Finally on this occasion it is very hard to put into words what the show organisers Joanne and Paul Owens have come through over this last 9 years and the reason this show happened in the first place.
Cathan, their little son was born on Boxing Day 9 years ago. Cathan was born with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia and was only diagnosed when he was 6 weeks old. He had surgery at 6.5 weeks and then 7 years later Cathan received his gift of life from Birmingham Childrens hospital, a liver transplant 2 years ago.
It would take a tear from a stone listing to these parents briefly telling me the heartache and trauma they came through to try to keep Cathan alive and to get him to where he is to day, a fine healthy child.
In Cathans case this story had a happy ending, but down the line the story is also tinged with sadness, because  another family which I will not discuss lost their loved one to give the gift of life to Cathan. Some family broken hearted some where.
This is where the The Glenshane Working Dog Show and the good Sporting men and and women North and South of the border of the Canine world who came out and supported this show on Sunday comes in to play.
Joanne and Paul Owens decided, because of all the help, hope and encouragement they received from The Royal Victoria Liver Support Group in their darkest hours, they wanted to give back something to them in gratitude.
So all proceeds from this show will go to this wonderful charity.
Cathan is one of the nicest and healthiest we boys you could meet, and he stole a place in my heart and in my prayers on Sunday.
Joanne and Paul Owens your show was a credit to you and a roaring success. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work, sleepless nights, and organisation went on behind the scenes to make this show such a success.
Thank you for the memories .To we meet again God Bless

      Margaret Mc Stay
