  5. Mickey Quinns Charity Champion of Champions Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 19thAugust 18 Located in the lap of Orchard Country and surrounded by a patchwork of apple orchards and green fields lies the prestigious Anaghmore Race track. This was the venue for Mickey Quinns Charity Champion of Champions Dog Show and Race Day in aid of Autism Sunday 19thAugust 2018. This show was well supported from North and South of the border. From early morning dogs, trailers, children, and families began to arrive with one thing in mind, to be part of this worthy charity dog show in aid of Autism and go home with a nice trophy for winning The Champion of Champions and qualify for Shanes Castle 2019. The weather was kind to us and kept up well, with just a few spots of rain early in the day. The show got under way at approx 12.30. Here are the Overall Showing Results. Childrens Handling Class : Judge Margaret Mc Stay Well done to Brooke Rafferty, the very worthy winner of the childrens handling class. It was nice to see so many children taking part in the showing. Keep up the good work. You are the show organisers and competition winners of tomorrow, and you will keep the sport going long after we all have gone way beyond the rainbow bridge. Mickey Quinn had a beautiful shield for the winner Brooke Rafferty, and every single child in the ring also went home with a lovely trophy for taking part. Well done to all. Here are the results of the Showing : Ladies Handling Class Lisa Beggs with Joker ( Judged by : Mr Aj Titterington) Gents Handling Class Billy Kerry with Snowball ( Judged by: A lady from the Autism Society) Albert Titterington awarded everybody in the ring that took part in the ladies and Gents handling classes a free ticket for Shanes Castle 2019. Dylan Doran with Buster. Mick the Miller Ned Kane with Scooter Reserve Ned Kane with Fonk Under 22 Paddy Mc Grath with Amber Over 23 Michael Mc Grath with Tucker and Master Mc Grath qualifier Under 23 Paddy Mc Grath with Pepsi A Big Congratulations to all above winners. There was a very poignant and sad moment at Sundays show, when the partner and brother of the late Declan Jordan, an avid whippet man, donated and presented a Shield to the Champion Whippet winner Fiona Devlin in memory of Declan who passed away as result of a motorbike accident a few months ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with his partner and family at this very sad time in their lives. Very soon it was raffle time and always guaranteed to generate a flurry of excitement around the place. Some happy campers going home from there. And Finally, what this show was all about. Autism changes the way people communicate and experience the world around them. Every autistic person is different. Some are able to learn, live and work independently but many have learning differences or co-occurring health conditions that require specialist support. Mickey Quinn from lurgan set out last Sunday, with the support of the good people of the Canine Community to raise funds to help make life a little more comfortable in some small way, by raising funds from the proceeds of his charity dog show for people suffering from Autism. And this Mickey done in big measure, along with Tom Barry, Michael Quinn junior, and a brilliant back up team, by raising £1450, and was handed over to the Autism Society on the day in full view of everybody at the show. Mickey, what an achievement, and what a substantial amount of money to raise from the large turnout at your charity show. Well done Mickey and your backup team. You all done a wonderful job honest and true. And Finally, A big thank you to the judges on the day. Your judging was impeccable and carried out with precision and fairness. With so many dogs in each class, a hard days work was carried out by all and a job well done. It was nice to see the King of the Castle himself Albertj Titterington at the show and on the judging panel on Sunday. Albert is a true sportsman and supports so many shows North and South of the border during the year. At this stage Mickey Quinn would like me to thank all the sponsors who contributed to the success of his show, you know who you are. Your sponsorship was so much appreciated. And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank Mickey Quinn, Tom Barry and Michael Quinn junior for a great days enjoyment, and a brilliant show day. I know you and your team have been working tirelessly behind the scenes for weeks now, just to make last Sunday a successful and enjoyable day out for everyone. Without your hard work and dedication none of this would happen. It is also nice to know that Autism Society will benefit from your input and hard graft. A great day and a great show, and I am already looking forward to next years Charity Show and your Race Day. This was a truly brilliant Championship Dog Show, a great family day out, and a day to remember. Well done Mickey and team. Margaret Mc Stay LikeShow More Reactions

  8. Tully Castle Dog Show Saturday 11thAugust 18 Tully Castle lies on the hill overlooking the west shore of Lower Lough Erne, with the waters edge flapping around the perimeter of the Castle grounds. This impressive Castle is the remains of a fortified house and bawn, and is set on beautiful Tully Point. This beautiful backdrop was the venue for Tully Castle Festival and Dog Show Saturday 11thAugust 18. The weather was very kind to us all day, and as the Churchill Brass Band played in the background, this added to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the Festival. There was a nice crowd of people there, all out for a days enjoyment among family and friends. The Festival commenced at 1.00pm, and very soon the grounds of the Castle had filled up with young and old, all out enjoying the fun and frolics of this annual festival. There was Bouncy Castles for the children, and many stands for the grown ups to browse around and take some bargains home. The Dog Show began at 2.00pm. Here are the showing Results. I must not forget the lady of the day. Yes Norma Heap on the PA system. Norma, in your own very special way, you kept us all well informed of the ring classes and the winners. Thank you for that Norma, everything went without a hitch. A few very important ladies who helped in and out of the ring : Nicola Heap/Sue Hogg/Florence Corrigan and Carol Robinson. You all done a wonderful job ladies and it was a pleasure for John and Myself to work along side you all. And Finally, Finally, a special word of thanks to Scott Fallis and Wesley Scott, and your brilliant back up team. I know a lot of hard graft and sleepless nights went into organising this very successful Festival and Dog Show. Scott, Wesley, and team without your input and organisational skills, this day would not of been possible. We really enjoyed the show and the beauty of Tully Castle” and many thanks for the memories again this year. Already looking forward to next years Festival and Dog Show. Margaret Mc Stay

  10. Sporting Whippet Club NI Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 5THAugust 18. Sitting on the outskirts of the bustling town of Ballymena is Ballee Playing Fields. This superb location with its well maintained lawns was the venue for the 4th Sporting Whippet Club NI Sunday the 5thAugust 18. As the sun broke through the clouds, it was evident another great day was on the cards for the Sporting Whippet Club NI. From 10.30am onwards the good canine folk, both from inside and outside the whippet club began arriving in the field, all kitted out for another good day of racing and showing. And that was what was delivered on the day. The childrens slipping race was a big attraction on Sunday, and really brought out the umph in these young slippers. Our young sporting girls and boys are our Country Sports people of tomorrow, so let them walk in our footsteps, if only for a little while. And taking those steps, they certainly showed the grown ups how to slip a dog. The racing heats started at approximately 12.00pm, followed by the showing, with the finals ran after the showing. 11. Gene Gallaghers Dog Show and Race Day at Sligo Agricultural Show, Grange, Co Sligo Saturday 4thAugust 18. Located in the scenic valley between Ben Bulben mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, lies the village of Grange, Co Sligo. This was the venue for Gene Gallaghers Dog Show and Race Day Saturday 4thAugust 18. As we arrived early, with the dog show being part of the Agriculture Show, we had time for a walk through the stands and soak up the Carnival buzz that was ozzing out across the Sligo Countryside. The craic and the banter was brilliant, and the atmosphere was electric. Every Agricultural animal you could mention was on show. Cows, sheep, horses, various stands, water bubbles, bouncy Castles, water slides for the children, and many more attractions on offer to many to mention. Time passes so quickly, it was soon time to head back to the dog show on site. Although the crowd was small, there was a good turnout of dogs, especially in the Terrier ring. 14. Tullylish Working Terrier Club Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 29thJuly 18 Deep in the heart of the picturesque County Down countryside, with its magnificent scenery, lies the beautiful town land of Tullylish. This picturesque setting sits on the River Bann, and contains the villages of Gilford, Laurencetown, and Bleary. This was the venue for the Tullylish Working Terrier Club Dog Show and Race day Sunday 29thJuly 18. For a day that started raining down in buckets in other parts of Northern Ireland, Tullylish did not have a drop of rain. We were blessed with the weather for a change, and the Gods were definately looking down on us. The sun shone all day as the Canine men, women and their little folk arrived in force with their prized Canine crew in tow. From my own observation, over the past couple of years our doggie shows have become real family days out, and Sunday was no different. This was very evident by the turnout on the day, of how popular this annual event is. There was just a lovely homely atmosphere, good craic, and a few chin whacks with the good folk of the Canine community. This is what our dog shows are about, and this did happen at Tullylish last Sunday. This year there were five show rings which was brilliant thinking by the club. It brought in Terrier/Lurcher/Whippet/Bull Cross/ and Strong dog men and women from all parts of the country. Every year this show goes from strength to strength, and this year was no different. There was a burger and ice cream van on site. Little Riley Mc Cormack and Mairead Fearons two little boys, Thomas and Ruairi and Heidi Mc Alinden had a ball between the burger van and ice cream van. These little people are our huntsmen and women of to morrow, so we need to take care of them at our shows and lead by example. They are four we characters in their own right and lovely children. They just play around all day and give nobody any trouble. Some tired we people on Sunday night. There was a good turnout of Terriers/Lurchers/Whippets/Bull Cross and Strong Dogs. With the five rings on the go, Tullylish Dog show was certainly buzzing with the sound of barking dogs. Time passes so quickly, it was soon time to start on the menu for the day.The coursing started at approx 12.00 noon, followed by the showing and straight racing afterwards. Here are the Results. Hope I got them all right. And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. Yes John Barry and Paul Mc Alinden, you and your back up team are simply the best. You run your show with impeccable organisation and skill. It was very evident a lot of preparation went on behind the scenes to make this show a most enjoyable day for everyone. All events went without a hitch, and some very happy people went home with another nice trophy for the mantle piece. John and Paul, you are both two gentlemen, and honest and true sportsmen. Thank you both, and the Tullylish Working Terrier Club for another top class show this year, and hopefully we can enjoy more of the same again in 2019. Margaret Mc Stay

  17. Tribute to a Dear Friend. With tears in our eyes and a heavy heart, we said Goodbye to day in Annalong to one of natures Gentlemen John Heslip, a Great Terrierman in the Canine world . Safe in the arms of the lord. I Am Free Do not grieve for me now my Canine friends, I am free I am following the path God Laid for me I took his hand when I heard him call I turned my back and left it all I could not stay another day, To Love, to Show, to Hunt or play I found a peace at close of day. Be not burdened with the times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow Perhaps my time seemed all to brief Do not lengthen it now with undue grief Lift up your hearts my Canine friends and share with me God wanted me now, He set me free. 18. Wicklow Terrier, Lurcher and Whippet Club Dog Show and Race Day at Rathnew (David Dickensons Show ) Sunday 22ndJuly 18. Rathnew Co Wicklow, is a village located south of the capital of Dublin, along the M11 motorway between Dublin and Wexford. Famous for its Gaelic Football , this lovely Irish country village lies comfortably among the scenic and now famous Wicklow hills. This was the location for David Dickensons Charity Dog Show and Race day Sunday 22.7.18 . We were up with the dawn chorus and headed for Mc Donalds in Newry, to meet up with all the other Northern Canine folk for the journey down to Wicklow. After a few hick ups along the way and a few laughs, we reached our destination around 10.00am. It was not long to the field started filling up with a good mix of Terriers, Lurchers and Whippets from North and South of the border. A chip van, toilet facilities, ringside parking and a very good PA system were on site. Jade Dunphy, you done a very professional job, keeping the good Canine folk informed of their classes and winnings on the day. I met up with some lovely people yesterday, some old friends and also made some new ones. Graham Versey and Jennifer Arnold were there with their winning whippets and went home happy campers with an armful of rosettes. It was certainly Barry Chambers day on Sunday winning everything before him both in showing and Racing with his winning Whippet Alfie. Your dogs are a credit to you Barry, and you are a true country sportsman. Barry races and shows his dogs in the summer and brings them on vacation to the field in the winter to visit his friends Mr Rynard Fox and his neighbour Mr Bugs Bunny. What a vacation. Jim Maher and Trevor Cahill Collars were there with every type of Dog Collar you could ask for. Thank you Denise Cahill for the lovely new Whippet Collar you designed yourself. I know it will be very lucky to us at future shows. The racing began at approximately 12.30 noon The racing created some laughter and excitement around the race track. I must say it was very relaxing, and April Dickenson made it look so easy, assisted by Jed Donagh on flag and Pat Dunphy on the lure. I really enjoyed this part of the show immensely. Here are some racing results. Lurchers : Billy Burn/ Whippets : Tom Quinn/ Terriers : Tom Blackburn/ Pets : April Dickenson. Loads of photographs from this show on Face book at the moment. There was a very poignant moment at the Lurcher ring when David Dickensons brother Noel Dickenson stepped forward to present the Arthur Dickenson Memorial Cup to Frank Kenny, Champion Lurcher winner, in memory of their late father Arthur Dickenson who passed away on show day some years ago. I am sure Arthur is looking down on his family with pride on this show day. And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank most sincerely David Dickinson, his wife Marie, daughters April, Tomasina, Delores Goucher, and all their loyal band of helpers on the day for another great family day out at their charity dog show. Many thanks for your beautiful presentation to me on Sunday. I do not deserve it, as I do this job as a labour of love and love the Canine Community and all it represents with a passion, and probably will continue to do so to the good lord decides to calls me home. Again many thanks. The Dickenson Family are giving the proceeds of this Charity Dog Show to Pieta House. Pieta House runs a free of charge service and since 2006 have helped 30,000 people in suicidal distress or engaging in self harm. Also people can avail of bereavement counselling. What a very worthy cause. David, we all enjoyed ourselves down there in Co Wicklow on Sunday, and look forward to more of the same again in 2019. Margaret Mc Stay
  19. Man O War Dog Show and Race Day Saturday 21st July 18 With the jingling of the alarm clock loud and clear in my ears, and the Dog chorus howling from the dog pens, our canine companions had issued a reminder that the day had arrived for the Man O War Dog Show and Race day. As we drove through Keady, beautiful Clea Lake came into view. A tributary of the river Callan, Clea lake ripples radiantly, and runs parallel with winding country roads through South Armagh. Onward bound, our scenic drive guided us through this stunning part of Northern Ireland, and to the venue for a superb Dog Show and family day out. A large crowd in attendance at this now very popular show. The show rings were well situated, with a brilliant mix of Lurcher,Terriers ,Whippets, Pups and Strong Dogs on the day. The racecourse was in mint condition, and what an up hill gallop that was. A great challenge for any good racing dog, and no doubt we were not disappointed. As usual the whole show from start to finish was run with impeccable taste and organisation. The gods of sun shone all day, with not a hint of rain in sight. The craic was good with plenty of banter, and above all your friendship. It was nice to see so many children in the childrens handling class. These young people are our show organisers of tomorrow, so it is heart warming to see them starting early on the Country Sports scene, and following in our footsteps. Some tired little people on Saturday night. As usual the raffle generated a flurry of excitement, with some fantastic prizes to be won. Mickey Quinn went home a happy bunny, after winning a hamper of beauty products for his wife Paula. Guess who will be in the good books this week. The raffle was followed by an auction, with auctioneer for the day Maurice Mc Dowell selling off some treasured items. Niall O Cloghan went home to Sligo with two lovely pictures, while lamps and hunting gear went in a matter of minutes. Well done Maurice, and for a brilliant cause. The racing commenced at approximately 12.00 noon, followed by the showing immediately afterwards. Here are the Racing Results : Whippets Gladys and Alex Savage with Murphy Under 21" Joe Leonard with Rosin Under 23" Lurcher Neil Pinkerton with Dipper Over 23" Lurcher Lee brooks with Bobby Under 23" Elite Joe Leonard with Not Scared Over 23" Elite Michelle Rafferty with Sally/Joe Leonard Blue ( Joint 1st ) Bull Cross Mickey Quinn with Haus Rough Coated Neil Pinkerton with Gunner Pups Alison Gamble with Ziro Greyhounds Michelle Rafferty with Sky Showing Results Champion Whippet Mairead Fearon with Jill Reserve Champion John Mc Stay with Jack Champion Lurcher Maurice Mc Dowell with Poacher Reserve Champion Maurice Mc Dowell with Blue (Handled by Neil Pinkerton ) Champion Terrier Conor Quinn with BOB Reserve Champion Declan Owens with Mink Champion Strong Dogs Tom Barry with Shamgar Reserve Champion Ethan Barry with Nancy Champion Bull Cross Neil Pinkerton with Ben Reserve Champion Cathal Farrell with Turbo Champion Pup Conor Quinn with Midge Reserve Champion Michael Quinn with Elvis Overall Show Champion and Best in Show Mairead Fearon with Jill Reserve Champion Tom Barry with Shamgar Congratulations to Mairead and Tom and above winners, and well done to all. And Finally may I take this opportunity to thank the Judges Childrens Handling Class : Joyce Anderson Whippets : Jonter Campbell Lurchers : Mark Gorman Terriers : Patrick Wilson Strong Dogs : Paddy Burns Judging is a difficult job, but a job well done by all. A big thank you to Plunkett Rafferty and his good wife Ann for the show venue. Without you the show could not take place. Also Charlene the flowers were much appreciated. I do not deserve them. I do this job as a labour of love. Again many thanks. Loads of photographs on face book at the moment. Finally, Finally, I felt a sense of pride and admiration for this young women and her back up team on Saturday. Charlene, together with your beautiful children Brooke and Chelsea and your troops on the ground, you produced a very enjoyable show and race day to be proud of. It was very evident a lot of hard work was carried out behind the scenes to make this day possible, and so successful. Your show is a credit to you and long may it continue. Lets not forget, this show was run for the Charity "Cash for Kids," a charity very close to all our hearts. This charity responds to the needs of children in our communities, so they can live life to the full and realise their full potential. Children supported are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect. This Charity is always standing in the wings to reach out to the community in our hour of need. We never know when difficult times will knock on our doors and we will have to reach out for help. A very worthy Charity. But remember, you the good Canine folk of Northern Ireland and further afield, it was your generosity and kindness that made all of this happen by coming and supporting the show. Charlene , you run a top class show on Saturday, and many thanks for a really enjoyable day out amongst like minded people. Look forward to more of the same next year. Margaret Mc Stay

  24. Cuchulann Terrier and lurcher Club Dog Show and Raceday at Laurencetown, Sunday 1stJuly 18 Laurencetown is famous for its green fields and ancient building, churches and chapels, but over the last six years another string has been added to that bow. This picturesque village is now famous for its dog shows and race days held annually at Springvale Road Laurencetown. This rolling revelation of country side was the venue for the Cuchalainn Terrier and Lurcher Club dog show and race day Sunday 1stJuly 18. The weather was very welcoming, if not a little too hot. I am told it was 29 degrees on Sunday. Dogs were well looked after and washed down with cold water at different intervals during the show. Very soon the field was filled to capicity with barking dogs, trailers and families. This year has brought a few new faces on the show scene, all eager to join the razzmatazz of the Canine world to show and race their faithful Canine friends in the summer season. As I walked around the rings, clicking away with my mobile phone camera, I met up with some very nice people from the Terrier/Lurcher and Whippet community. These people show their dogs in the summer, and work them in the field in the winter. True country sports people. The Raffle took place, and as usual created a lively atmosphere, with some fun and frolics. John Mc Stay is still crying his eyes out, because I won more prizes than he did. He is a big baby.
