mattyg 1,862
i agree totally with socks, as thats axactly what i do with my pair. 1 dog is almost 4 and the other is almost 2 and they both have different jobs that i can rely on them to do(most of the time lol). because they aint massive dogs sometimes one of em mite need a little bit of assistance when doing certain jobs! but not all the time! matt Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
To a degree I would agree with your comments DG. I think you are right to a certain degree when you say that two pups are more than a handful, depending on the person who has taken reasonability for both pups. In your post I think you have tarred every lurcher man with the one brush , on one have we guys out there who are not fit to keep pigs , let alone a dog, and I have met them, but there are really good lurch men out there who are more than capable of taking sole reasonability for two or more dogs and bringing them on to very high standards , I have seen these dogs work at first hand, and I believe these guys dont desereve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the guys you refere to in your post. GET OFF YER HIGH HORSE KID ........ IVE HAD RUNNING DOGS A LONG TIME ................ AND IVE SEEN THE POINT I HIGHLIGHTED .... MANY , MANY TIMES BY MANY FAR MORE EXPERIENCED DOGMEN THAN YOU AND FRANK , I WASNT TALKING OF PRATTS NOT BEING ABLE TO LOOK AFTER MORE THAN TWO DOGS !!!! , I WAS TALKING OF MEN SUB - CONSCIOUSLY FAVOURING ONE SAPLING OVER ANOTHER YOU SEE .....THE COURSING BRED DOGS AND TERRIERS ARENT EFFECTED TO THE SAME DEGREE , THEIR WORK IS IN THEM OR IT ISNT !, HOWEVER THE LURCHER WHICH IS A JACK OF ALL TRADES .. MOST CERTAINLY IS !!! IMO HAVING TWO PUPS WITH AN AGE DIFFERENCE CAN BE JUST AS BAD FOR AN INEXPERIENCED LURCHER OWNER AS TWO LITTER SIBLINGS ! , TIME COMES WHEN THE DOGS ARE RUNNING TOGETHER OR IN THE FIELD TOGETHER .... THE DOMINANT SAPLING WILL PUSH / BULLY AND STEAL THE OTHERS CATCH TILL THE UNDERDOG BECOMES ...FAR .. LESS OF AN EFFECTIVE HUNTING ANIMAL THAN IT WOULD HAVE IF RAISED ON ITS LONESOME , PULLING OFF ITS STRIKE TO ALLOW THE DOMINANT DOG THE CATCH ........ WONT HAPPEN ? ............. DONT YOU BELIVE IT ! I WILL SAY AGAIN .............VERY , VERY , VERY FEW MEN ARE CAPABLE OF SUCESSFULLY BRINGING ON TWO PUPS .......... VERY , VERY FEW MEN HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO HANDLE / TRAIN TWO PUPS AT ONCE ........................ AND ........... VERY FEW MEN HAVE ACCESS TO ENOUGH GAME TO BRING ON TWO PUPS ..... AND I AINT TALKING RUNNING ONLY A COUPLE OF DOZEN ONCE A WEEK !! DUCKWING Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
DUCKWING, I dont know you and you dont know me. DUCKWING 302
WELL FRANK , FIRST OFF ............. I WASNT GETTING AT YOU OR ANYONE ELSE FOR BEING UNABLE TO CARE FOR TWO OR MORE DOGS PROPERLY ......... AS YER PAL IRISH LURCHER SEEMED TO READ ? INTO MY POST !!! SECOND .......... I WAS TRYING TO OFFER NEW AND VERY KEEN LURCHER MEN IN GENERAL A BIT OF GOOD ADVICE WHICH WOULD STAND THEM IN GOOD STEAD THROUGH A LIFE OF KEEPING RUNNING DOGS , AS ITS VERY EASY TO GET CARRIED AWAY AND HAVE TOO MANY DOGS FOR TOO LITTLE HUNTING ITS FAR BETTER TO EXPLOIT THE FULL ABILITYS OF A DOG ......... THAN HAVE TWO WHICH ARE LEFT LIKE AN UNREAD BOOK WITH UNTURNED PAGES !!! LAST BUT NOT LEAST FRANK ......................... I AM CERTAINLY NOT ON ANY SORT OF WIND UP ............. BUT I THINK YOU MUST BE ? .............. READ BACK THROUGH YOUR POSTS / THREADS MATE OVER THE SHORT TIME SINCE YOU STARTED CONTRIBUTEING ON HERE .... ARE YOU REALLY TRYING TO TELL ME YOUR AN EXPERIENCED DOG MAN ? ....... I THINK I WILL LEAVE IT THERE , THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH LEARNING SOMETHING NEW ABOUT THIS GAME ....... I LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY ..... THEN AGAIN I DO TRY AND LISTEN AND TAKE IN WHEN SOMETHINGS SAID ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
DUCKWING, agreed with what you said before, which was fine as far as im concerned. But it was you, who turned round and started getting on your high horse, telling us how your far more experinced ect, in a ''I KNOW IT ALL'' way. Once again, i wish you good luck, i will not get into a tit for tat match with you, far better places to be and be going. Quote Link to post
tote 869
Duckwing you talk a lot of sense,I know 'cos I've been there.I've yet to see someone bring on 2 pups or young dogs at the same time and do them justice. I'm not saying it can't be done Even when you have 2 working lurchers in the kennel it's very seldom that both dogs are of equal ability. So what happens? Usually if your only taking the 1 dog out for a quick shine or whatever you'll take out your best/favourite dog. So obviously if that dog is out more than the other it can only get even better than your other dog You might not even realise you are doing this but it does happen. Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Both my pups will get worked exactly the same. Dont care if one is better then the other. If going out for a quick flick, or run, the dog that was out last will get left behind, no matter how good it is, they will both get their fair turn for a run. I will also work them seprately when out ferreting, mooching ect. Their is far more worse things to worry about in this world. I have allways worked my dogs that way and allways will and am happy with that, thats all that matters. I have in the past, worked 6 lurchers of variouse sizes ect and never, ever, had a problem.
