jukel123 9,781
I had a deerhound lurcher I bought as a sapling at Appleby fair twenty or so years ago. I had met a few old mates there and was a bit merry. I bought the bitch "sold as seen". The guy who sold it me had acquired it that morning as a make weight in a horse sale. He knew nothing about her breeding or her background. As he said himself, it might be a stock worrier, so I got it for £100 quid less twenty notes luck. My Mrs gave me the usual earache when I brought it home, but it turned out not to have any vices. It wasn't a world beater and it preferred larger game. But it was a lovely dog to have around. It bonded with my Mrs big time and just about tolerated me. It would growl at any dog which came anywhere near her when she was in season, but on day 17, when she was about ten, she tied with my mate's lurcher when we were ferreting. They took off playing over a hill and when we caught up, she was well and truly stuck. Unbelievable. She had six pups and three of them I see from time to time. Each one of those pups recognises us immediately and goes apeshit with enthusiasm. They also remember "go to bed". They will leave the kitchen and go to their old kennel. They remember "see what's in the fridge'. We used to give them cheese , a helping of butter or a chicken wing treat. They also still know little tricks we taught them:-give a paw, sit etc. I thought pups would immediately forget their former owners. However, they were about 12 or fourteen weeks when they left us.Anybody else have experience of dogs with long memories? Edited April 4, 2022 by jukel123 8 Quote Link to post
