ChrisJones 7,975
In what one peer has called "one of the greatest constitutional outrages since 1689" the House of Lords has voted in favour of keeping the EU Charter of Fundamental Human Rights by 316 to 245. A majority of 71. The EU withdrawal bill is set to transfer almost all of the European statutes into UK law but the but the fundamental human rights charter was left out until now. The ayes are saying that the government, by excluding the charter, is restricting people's legal rights. The nays are saying that the law provides protections from elsewhere. Quote Opposing the motion, justice minister Lord Keen was heckled as he claimed retaining a "body of foreign law" after Brexit would be "one of the greatest constitutional outrages since 1689". He said: "What happened to the mother of parliaments? What happened to the concept of the sovereignty of this parliament? We're prepared, apparently, to abandon it in favour of a body of foreign law because we no longer trust ourselves to protect our own fundamental human rights. Is that what we've really come to? It is a shocking denouement. "The idea that we're going to have to cling on to a body of foreign law in order to maintain fundamental human rights in this country is simply astonishing. It would reflect not only a constitutional outrage but a total abdication of our responsibilities." The article goes on to say... Quote The Charter of Fundamental Rights contains a wide range of protections, including the right to a private life, freedom of speech, equality provisions and employment rights governing how workers are treated. It is broader than the European Convention On Human Rights , which is already part of UK law through the Human Rights Act. 1 ... but as we've established in other threads the states have the power to arbitrarily bestow powers of protection against anything they deem worthy of such and provides for a huge overreach against individual freedoms to express oneself. By retaining the charter you're essentially at the mercy of today's European rules without retaining the independence that Brexit was supposed to provide. Look over there! A royal baby! Aww isn't he cute! 1

Born Hunter 17,975
There's a petition to bin the Lords. For what it's worth (feck all) I'll post it if I can find d it. Since I've become a bit more politically aware ive supported the idea of chopping this archaic house anyway. And from a selfish point of view I'm not sure they've done anything that I'd consider of value to me anyway.

Blackbriar 8,569
If it looks like a stitch up, sounds like a stitch up and smells like a stitch up................ ............it's the unelected House ensuring checks and balances are in place. What a steaming pile of horse5hit - but they won't have to take the biggest bite, will they ?

But it isn't. The whole point of Brexit was to go it alone. Complete independence. Sink or swim you'd be masters/mistresses of your own destiny. What you have now is all of the stupid b*llsh*t rules and regulations retained with all the uncertainty that comes with the new independence. Now, this isn't a done deal but it's not painting a great picture.
Born Hunter 17,975
Here's that petition. 100k+ and two and a half months left. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/209433 Personally I don't want the upper house abolished, just have the Lords chopped for something more in line with a Democratic system. They're a throw back to absolute Monarchy and really is akin to our Monarch wielding power on political matters.
