Hob&Jill 258
Do a search pal, there is plently of info about it. If you do go for it without a collar, try to stick to more open warrens where there is less chance of them sliping off without you seeing. Quote Link to post
richie 1
personally... i wouldnt put any of my ferrets down without a collar on..... but if you did, then id make sure they were fed up well unless you like waiting around for a ferret to appear.. might be a good idea aswell to sling a bell around their necks so you have some chance of maybe hearing where it is.. probably end up getting full of mud though.. as hob & jill says, do a search for past topics. richie Quote Link to post
RichardC18 0
I've just bought a ferret finder and i can honestly say i think i was mad going out without one before... twice as much rabbits!! But I'm Sure there are other ways around it or else you'll just have to get saving Quote Link to post
Malt 379
People have been ferreting for thousands of years, so of course you can ferret without them. I might get told off by some folk on here who INSIST that you use one, but it's simply not the case. Having used one though, they do save you a whole lot of hassle, less waiting, knowing where to dig etc, but if you feed your ferret up the night before you go, it may still kill in the hole, but it shouldn't be long before it comes back. About 25-30 mins at the most in my experience. Having just stated that you can ferret without one, I'd totally recomend one though. Just ferret away and save your pennies up for next season. Guest Bigbob
Of course you can ferret with out a knocker box it will teach you the old skills .A few folk i know with boxes reach for the spade after there ferrets no showed for 5/10 minutes this isn't what a knocker box is for .The main benifits i rekon of a knocker box is in times gone by you would go out ferreting on a frosty morning from september to march and the rabbits would bolt ,these days theres hardly any frost mornings and more ferretings done out with the :ferreting season: and rabbits dont always bolt this is where a knocker box comes into its own .I will confess i even use mine to check ive still got all my ferrets in a large warren but i wont reach for the spade till im out of options Quote Link to post
Guest bigredbusa
i never used one , but have now got the mk3 and dont know how i have done without one . what i would say is change the collars for leather ones as they tend to slip off Quote Link to post

Its not just the ferrets sliping away from you,, its them getting stuck down below ,, Use a locator Quote Link to post
richie 1
its all well learning the old skills, but sometimes you have to move with the times & technology.. i use mine for piece of mind just so i know what their doing & their movements. but i can still say ive never had to dig down to a ferret yet, still no lay-ups. i recall about a month ago when i was out doing a set & i clocked my jill at 9 foot down & she was only moving back & forth about 1 or 2 feet so i knew she had hold of a rabbit, they was no way i would even attempt digging down that far. after about 25 minutes she surfaced with claret all over her face so i knew she done the business but still surfaced, but it was still nice to know what she was doing thanks to the locator.. i was out last week with my hob & jill doing a small set & after a while " 30 minutes " i got the mk3 out & had a scout around & found them both near an entrance about 3 foot inside & not moving, so i stuck my arm in & pulled out 1 dead rabbit & one getting chomped by my ferrets.. if i never had a locator i probably wouldnt of known they were there & it would of been 2 less rabbits for the bag.. end of the day each to their own, but ill use them to make my life a lot easier. richie Quote Link to post
IanB 0
There not needed but definitely worth having...they save time, help increase your bag and stop you losing a ferret....worth their weight in gold. Quote Link to post
