rob284 1,682
not many fighters today have or even need the heart of boxers from previous era's. They can earn more money from advertising hair products than Ali made fighting Larry holmes! A lot of boxers in the past did it because they had to, it was the only thing they were good at and there wasn't a great deal of other opportunities around other than fighting. Story's like jack dempsey being absolutely skint and walking into bars offering to fight the hardest man for cash on his way to greatness just don't happen anymore. Or Ali with his confidence and trash talk but actually delivering what he said and Mike tyson just knocking out every opponent he could get his hands on yet they all did what they wanted, when they wanted and they could do that to a certain extent as they weren't bothered about upseting the advertisers or TV companies, they just wanted to fight and make money! It's just different now and one hyped up fight can set you up financially for life, Tyson fury even admits he has made his money and is not bothered if he fights again or not which shows a lack of heart imo! I suppose it's the same with any sport really though, the advances in training and diet is all to be taken into account as well. Could Messi do the tricks he does if he was in pele's era and using his old leather boots and heavy ball on rough pitches but then again how good would Pele be today with top spec boots and lightweight ball on a perfectly manicured playing surface? Ali is considered the greatest but in todays world with life as it is would he of been even greater or would it off took what made him great away? in todays boxing ali would be stopped or points deducted for leaning on the ropes or grabbing the back of the head. He was good in his era but todays boxing is different, for better and for worse in some respects.
Blackbriar 8,569
Jack Dempsey Vs Jess Willard......old time boxing, at its savage best ! Dempsey (all 180lb of him!) was dwarfed by Big Jess, who had the heart of a lion. Watch how many times he either gets up, or manages to stay on his feet, despite taking a merciless beating...... https://youtu.be/jvCHk_kKpVI
AKA-BRINDLE 879
Big George wouldn't be considered big in today's heavyweight world. The older heavy weights wouldn't be big enough to compete with todaysSo george foreman at 6ft 3 18 stone would not be big enough. In my opinion someone like him would go through the current crop of heavyweights no trouble.I think the relatively smaller Joe Frazier could take most of them - another fearsome puncher ! Mind you, the late Jerry Quarry could give out a good dig, too..... As for Big George, he's an old man now, but I still would want him to him me twice ! Jerry Quarry one deep game individual...may he R.I.P...George Chuvalo was one tough f****r too...they may of played second fiddle to the likes of Ali and Frazier during one of the greatest heavyweight era's...but In my opinion they would of had the beating of any of todays heavyweight over 12 rounds...the 1st round of the 1st Frazier-v-Quarry fight...probably my favourite round of heavyweight boxing of all time
AKA-BRINDLE 879
rumble in the jungle has formans weight as 220 lbs thats only 15 stone 10 The 18st is from his comeback when he had been on the cheese burgers for years and was a old man but was still capable.not a good advert for the George Foreman grill then really, A shame them grills wernt as strong as big George...the coating wore off the plates on mine in weeks! Micheal Moorer's trainer Teddy Atlas said he knew they was in trouble when Foreman ran to the ring wearing the same old faded red trunks hed worn when he lost to Ali...he said wernt a man running from his ghosts but a man facing down his demons...Foreman hit Moorer so hard he split his gumshield in two...no ones getting up from that!...no matter how big they are
