I have done them 2 different ways, one with the kit, and one with a two bath system, had problems with both, like i say i made a few cockups bot got there in the end,

Like Jiggy said, make sure you make a good job of the skinning and fleshing, i will not be doing anymore untill next winter, the critters are going through the moult, and you get loads of problems with fly's when it is warm. Also forgot to mention the timing after they come out of the cure, you have to catch them just right to break down the fibres or they will dry like boards.

Seems you have to break the fur down no matter what method you use. So what's the advantage of using often expensive kits over let's say, using alum?

Honest question. I've never used a kit or any other manufactured cure, on a pelt, so don't know if their better or worse, than the cheaper route.

Years ago [Probably 30} i tried doing Rabbit skins with Alum and borax and messed up loads of them, now you can get these kits so i thought i would try them, too be quite honest at £30 there are not expensive and you can do half a dozen fox or around 30 rabbits in 1 kit,

I do use another method but i am sworn to secrecy on that for now.

Yea I did a few mink years ago with I think alum. Done them after watching Glenn Waters video on trapping and boarding mink. As I recall, I f****d up a few of them too. Found the skinning and fleshing to be the easiest part.

That is a very interesting website, one day I would love to have a go at making a pelt.

Now, can you tell me what the purpose of selling birds feet is?

Probably to put on stuffed Birds

Don't birds usually come with feet preattached?? ??

I case skin all of the pelts, they only board them to dry out before they go to the auction, i salt the pelts first for a couple of days then reflesh, wash, then strait into the tan, i have boarded them after the tan but it slows down the drying, the fox in the pic on its own was opened after the tan and also has all its feet, pads and nails
