Nik_B 3,791
I've got a massive Eucalyptus in the garden. From what I've read they can cause a lot of damage to foundations. We have a crack in the floor of one room on the same side of the house to the tree. At first I thought we had subsidence and needed underpinning but after some research I think this tree is the root of the problem (pun intended). So I can have it removed but what should I do about the damage? Obviously I am going to need to make sure this is the cause of the crack but I seems likely to me. Would removing the tree cause further damage when the roots rot away?

The thing is is removing the tree likely cause more problems? If the roots rot away would that lead to more subsidence? Or should we leave it and live with it. The problem is that tghe garden wasn't taken care off for many years and it's overgrown, these trees were probably nice well manicured ones but have been left to grow. I read that Eucalyptus is one of the worst ones and they have shallow roots which grow quite far out since they need loads of water.
Nik_B 3,791
No builders or tree surgeons with subsidence experience?
DIDO.1 22,870
I don't think removing tree will make more subsidence....you have no choice, it has to go or you risk further damage. Dig a trench and investigate.

Dig a trench and investigate. Thanks mate I agree. It's way to close for the size of it and there's two conifers that have gone mad as well. Apparently the roots are hard to kill and it's very pervasive so I'll need to talk to a tree surgeon first.
