Starting age?

My mate has got a Bull/greyhound/saluki which is 8 mths old,he's got her retrieving a rabbit skin dummy both day and night and has her to a good level of obedience,jumping on command etc.He's asked me to post on here and ask some of you more experienced boys what age he should be thinking about starting her on live stuff,she has caught 2 pheasants whilst mooching and has brought both straight back to hand.Any advice would be appreciated.

Wouldn't generally recommend it at that age though. Every dog is different and I knew mine was ready.

IVE HAD A COUPLE OF DOGS OF THIS CROSS AND REALLY THINK THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO BECOME A GREAT ALL ROUNDER

 

BUT I FIND THEM VERY VERY "CRAMPY" DUE TO THEIR POWERFUL BUILD....BIDE YOU TIME OR GO FOR IT...YOUR DECISION RESTS ON THE DOGS SHOULDERS AND IF ITS READY OR NOT...

IF YOU'VE GOT TIME TO JUST MOOCH THEN DO THAT FOR A WHILE,NOTHING TOO HARD PERSONALLY I DONT START A UP TILL ITS AT LEAST 12 TO 14 MONTHS OLD LET IT BE A PUP WHILE IT STILL IS GRADUALLY START IT ON RABBITS MOVING ON TO BIGGER STUFF LATER ON,IF U WISH,TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG IS A BAD THING U MIGHT NOT NOTICE NOW AND THINK UR DOG IS SHIT HOT BUT YOU WILL NOTICE IN YEARS TOO COME THE DOG WILL SLOW DOWN ALOT QUICKER,REMEMBER GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE THAT WAIT!!!

19 months,hopefully your patience will pay off.

 

Its a tough question as every dog is different some need egging on and some need holding back,if I was your [bANNED TEXT] I would run her on a few very easy rabbits if she seems to be enjoying herself carry on when she seems to tire or if she doesnt seem to intrested take her home and try again in a fortnight.

I've always taken mine out whenever they're ready to tag along, wouldn't enter them to early on the hard work, and not really bothered about lamping just yet.

Let them get used to being out in the field and surroundings, all the different smells, noises, stock etc..

 

When they are ready you'll know.

 

Young bitch I got at the mo has chased a few rabbits, very keen on hunting up with the terriers but loves to play.... so I just let her do her own thing...

 

She was all keyed up at the weekend and showing an interest in the mark, when I got the fox out she didn't want to know, had a sniff while the terriers were having a rag then walked away.... not a problem in my eyes... there's plenty of time

Here she is again, listening to the terriers working cover, when the day comes and it all gels together I'm sure she won't let me down.
