philpot 5,115
An old chap in our village sadly died a few weeks ago, in fact the grandfather of someone I know. In years gone by Jeff was a keen wildfowler, pigeon shooter and dog trainer leaving a few sacks of bits and bobs which were offered to me rather than throwing them in the skip. I readily accepted whatever was to come....................today, four sacks arrived, 10 floating, weighted duck decoys with tethering lines still attached, shell and whole pigeon decoys, an old canvas wildfowler's game bag, which I love and will make full use of and a pile of various weighted dog training dummies but also in the sack was this. Jeff had made a complete dummy shotgun out of wood, the barrels being broom handles and whilst still very dirty, I could see the work that had gone into this dummy gun. There was also a second stock again carved from scratch but not finished. I managed to establish that he also had a .22 starting pistol, as used at sporting events, which inserted into a carved cavity where a trigger would normally be found, this was then used to train a young dog to the sound and sight of guns. It is a great pity that the starter gun was not found to complete the outfit. Just as a side note, when clearing the cellars of Jeff's shooting gear, they also found about a dozen different types of camo net but assumed nobody would want them so put them on the bonfire . It is however an interesting little story and only wished I had met Jeff because I will wager he had some great tales to tell. Phil 6 Quote Link to post

philpot 5,115
You have hit the nail on the head Jimmy, just what I had in mind. Great minds think alike matey. I am going to make the other stock into a finished gun as well so they can both stand in the fireplace next to the log burner, a fitting place to show his work. Phil 1 Quote Link to post
