My bitch has raw areas between two of her toes on three of her feet. It's not on the same pairs of toes on each of the feet and hasn't affected the pads at all.

I was assuming that it was due to her over-zealous cleaning, as she's a bit feline about foot cleanliness, but couldn't work out why it was only ever those three feet. However, I then noticed that, on the rare occasions that she wees while on the lead (due to the camber of the road) it only flows over those three feet...maybe a coincidence?

I've been spraying between the toes with Battles gentian violet spray and not walking her as the areas was becoming sensitive and have kept this up for a few weeks but with no improvement that I can see.

I decided to take her to the vet next week and thought I'd walk her today to see how she got on. Due to the garden rest I needed to trim the nails but noticed (coincidentally) that the unaffected foot didn't need trimming.

I did a quick google last night and gave up after a single website came up with dozens of different causes and solutions from grass seeds, cancer and allergies to saline solutions, manuka honey and amputation!

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Are you using bleach, jeyes fluid or other disinfectants on kennel floors without rinsing with clean water afterwards it can cause raw pads/feet. Also stressed dogs can give themselves licking sores in the off season if their bored.

i couldnt dream of guessing a cause, but if you soak the feet for 10 or 15 minutes 2 or 3 times a day in a very strong salt water mixture you will definitely harden up the skin to some degree. this will also help to wash off any chemicals/fungi/bacteria etc which may be the cause.

Jiggy, she used to be an outside dog but I moved them both in earlier this year so her bedding is now usually the sofa!

Beast, thanks for that, I actually decided to start doing what you advised after walking her yesterday evening so I'll keep at it and see how she gets on.

Shame really as my four year old daughter liked having a dog with purple feet. :D

My little Collie lurcher had something weird going on between two of her hind toes last year. Raw, oozy. I think it started near the nail bed, and she wouldn't leave it alone. In the end I just dabbed it with antiseptic twice a day and it dried up and cleared after a couple of weeks. I can only think that it was a bacterial skin infection possibly brought on by a tiny scratch, thorn, insect bite... one of those, or even a graze.

Thanks Skycat. Out of interest, which antiseptic did you use?

The other thing I've considered is something to dab on her feet which will dissuade her from licking...bitter apple?...or Scotch bonnet! :icon_eek:

You'd think with her being pure kelpie she'd be ok in the feet department but her feet have always been different to my other three kelpies. Theres were tight and rounded and never needed trimming while hers are more of a hare foot...similar to a little collie x whippet I once owned.

Well its not the bedding so or you would have a rash on your arse. Usually with stuff like that change 1 thing at a time until something clicks bedding, medicate for infection, advocate for mites and diet etc. I remember someone saying they used to bath dog in sea water for skin irrations but id imagine salt and water is the same thing. The vet will probably recommend steriods and a 50 pound a bag dognut.

i should be very wary of putting anything on which may potentially irritate the feet. if you really want to stop her biting and licking, i should go for a weak iodine solution (pevidine or similar). the salt water trick should show some results in a week or two. good luck, let us know how you get on
